Many years ago, in the days when you had to play four pieces for Grades 6 and 7, I played "Modinha Russo-Brasileira" by Nicolas Slonimsky as my fourth piece for Grade 6.

I really like this piece which comes from 51 Minitudes for Piano. I wondered if anyone has played any of the other 50 minitudes and could tell me whether they are in a similar style and of a similar standard.

Hi,
I just looked up Slonimsky on Grove On-Line (through my local e-libary) and found out he was an American composer into Russian music, and worked on music encylopedias etc (He died in 1995). Do you know which year he was in the Grade 6 List ? I might have your piece in some old exam books. I don't know the 50 Minitudes for Piano, but I am always on the look out for new repertoire.

In addition to scholarly books, he wrote "Lexicon of Musical Invective: Critical Assaults on Composers Since Beethoven's Time". This mainly shows how difficult it is to judge new music on first hearing ill.gif .

It was in 1982.
The title is 51 Minitudes for Piano (I said the other 50 because I know one). I discovered that an edition is available at musicroom and I wondered if anyone could tell me anymore about it so I can decide if I want to buy it or not.

It's on the current TG grade 6 syllabus and one of the pieces printed in the exam book.
