Hi people

Does anyone know somewhere where I can practice cadence recognition? one of our tutors at uni does lots of aural tests with us and I can do intervals but I'm rubbish at cadences. Always have been. Is there a website or somewhere that I can go on to practice.

Why not sit down and play them on the piano? It will let you see which notes change / stay the same, and you can practise again and again.

Why not look at Hofnote - a brilliant website - or try the aural series of books by David Turnbull. I use both.

you can get a sibelius software which is really good called: AURALIA

Or try getting the grade 6-8 ABRSM Aural training in Practise Book, possibly with the CD

Or maybe try, Aural Time Grade 8, by David Turnbull

Listen to pieces you are playing, and work out the cadences from that.

Here are a few tips:

Perfect and Plagal cadences sound FINISHED.
Perfect cadences will sound like a full proper finish. Chords V - I. (Play them on the piano)
  • Chords V - I. GBD - CEG

Plagal cadences sound finished but they sound like "AMEN" (a more graceful finish). Chords IV - I
[indent]
  • Chords IV - I. FAC - CEG
Imperfect Cadences and Interrupted cadences DO NOT SOUND FINISHED.
[indent]Imperfect Cadences - Sound as though they can still carry on. It is normally either Chords I/ii/IV - V.
  • Chords I - V. CEG - GBD
  • Chords ii - V. DFA - GBD
  • Chords IV -V. FAC - GBD
Interrupted cadences sound quite awful: Chords V - vi. However, interrupted cadences are very easy to identify. Because you will notice that it is a Major chord (V), followed by a Minor Chord (vi). This makes it easy to identify.
  • Chords V - vi. GBD - ACE

Just try play them on the piano, it helps.

Excellent. Thanks for that.

I knew what chords made up the cadence but I always have difficulty hearing it.
