Hello laugh.gif

I'm new to this forum and would like to say hello to everyone. I'm learning to play the flute and violin and have been having lessons for a couple of months now and loving it. Have got 2 fantastic teachers and although I can only play simple tunes at the moment, it's just so nice when I've had a rubbish day at work to come home and practice.

I'd love to be able to play in a group (although I'm very basic at the moment) and was wondering if there were any other adult learners in the Cardiff area learning the flute and/or violin as I've run out of treats to keeping bribing my cat with!

Hello and welcome, Blackbird.

I'm afraid I'm nowhere near Cardiff, so can't help you on that score. However if you're prepared to travel occasionally there are events all over the country where people from these forums get together to make music. The next ones are in Market Harborough on July 8th (an informal playing day) Stalybridge on July 28th (an Adult Learner concert). You'd be very welcome at either or both of these.

Cheers

Hi and welcome from me too. Cardiff is a good place to find adult learners as there is a brilliant music college there as I am sure that you know. Go there and ask if you can place a notice on their board. You may find lots of others in a similar position, looking for fellow players. If you want a trip to North Wales next year I am planning a forum event in March here in Anglesey.

Welcome Blackbird77!!!
I am also NOT near Cardiff (what a shame).
Have you started both flute and violin two months ago or one earlier than the other?

I hope you find a group locally that you can play with, Blackbird77, it's so much more enjoyable than playing on your own. As others have said, it would be great if you could come to a forum event some time - many of us travel up and down the country to play at forum events and they're good fun! If you'd like to see some pictures of the most recent forum concert in Leeds last weekend, go to this thread

Hope you enjoy being a member of the forum, see you around smile.gif

Hello JoJo

I started the flute first but a couple of weeks later decided I wanted to learn the violin as well!!!!!

Thanks to everyone for your lovely comments and for making me feel so welcome - I shall definitely have to attend a forum event.

Hi and welcome! Alas I also live a long way from Cardiff.

I'm 47 and I have played the Piano since I was tiny (4?), the Guitar since I was 7, the Violin since I was 8, the Bass Guitar since I was 36 and the Flute since . . . Sunday! Fun ain't it!!

Similar to me then....started piano then could not face 'abandoning' the violin (as when I decided to learn an instrument I was in two minds between piano and violin) so started the violin a month later!!! laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

Welcome to the forums Blackbird77!

I live too far away from Cardiff to be able to play regualrly in any group you set up, but I wish you the best of luck in sorting something out. smile.gif

Hi Blackbird77,

I'm new to the forum as well. I've been playing the violin on and off for the past year (picked it up when my daughter started having lessons). I passed grade 2 with merit in March. It's not my main instrument (I'm working my way up the piano grades - took grade 5 last week) but, like you, I find instrumental playing very therapeutic, especially once the kids have gone to bed and I need to chill out! I have some simple violin duet books AND I live in Cardiff!

Hi LooneyTunes (great name!)

Congratulations on your Grade 2 and well done on taking Grade 5 piano - I would have loved to learn piano as well but I don't have pianist fingers (mine are short and stumpy - I'm just attempting 4th finger on the violin at the moment and I'm finding it a nightmare smile.gif my little finger doesn't want to stretch that far!!!).

If you don't mind someone who can only play the basics at the moment, it would be great to have a go at playing duets.

Many thanks to everyone for their lovely replies and making me feel so welcome to the Forum - it's right, once you start, you don't want to stop (until my cat decides to interrupt that is) biggrin.gif

Hi blackbird from Hazelkay,
I'm an hour away too and a beginner - if you would like a flute day this summer - I could offer lunch and maybe sarah-flute would join us?

Hi Hazelkay

Blackbird77

How about a day between 14th and 25th August? I've got lots of beginner's stuff. I live in a small cottage, but it has a large garden and a summer house which I use as a music room, so there are places to practise on one's own if you are as bad as me at sight reading! blush.gif
If that's any good you could pm me and we could organise travel and co-opt Sarah flute ( who can help us with our glitches laugh.gif )

I'm really new too. Anyone else learning to play the clarinet? Any tips on how to track down a teacher? I learnt to play the piano as a child but haven't played for years. I'm a total novice on the clarinet.

Hi Judi,

Welcome to the Forums! party1.gif

I'd forgotten that this was the first thread I posted in - seems a long while ago now........

I don't play the clarinet but there are many people here who do, all of whom will be able to give you advice and support. There's also a woodwind section which I'm sure you've visited already.

Do come and join us in the cafe - that's where I spend most of my time...... ph34r.gif

All the best,
