My discussion on favourite songs seems to be bubbling along nicely, so I thought I'd spice things up a little... What songs do you just
hate?Again, I'll go first.
The Lark In The Clear Air (Phyllis Tate) - A melody-free piece of utter schmaltz that disgraces the phrase "folk music" and is coincidentally on the ABRSM syllabus. My teacher actually wanted me to sing this musical obscenity for a Grade 4 exam and I refused point blank... that's how bad it is. I skipped straight to Grade 5 and never looked back.
Chart pop - Well, 99% of it anyway. I know, I know... easy target

we are the cheeky girls, we are the cheeky girls, you are the cheeky boys, you are the cheeky boys... arrrrrrrrrrrgggggh!!!

i hate that song but it always makes me laugh because its completely rubbish! I think there is a grade 2 singing piece called Bessie the Black cat or something like that. Oh that song drives me insane! I have heard it
so many times at numerous school concerts.

Thankfully I never did Grade 2...
If we're getting into specific pop songs, here's one for you: "Why you gotta play that song so loud? BECAUSE WE WANT TO! BECAUSE WE WANT TO!" I went through a brief pop-liking phase about 5 years ago and I thought that song was the greatest thing ever... except for the Spice Girls.

I'd say anything in the dance charts. I just can't see much talent in "music" that's produced on a computer. Music is created by performers and their instruments, how much expression can a computer give out?

Schmaltz... hmm... I guess it's a Jewish word. It means something really sentimental and slushy, like Christmas-card poetry and cute teddies saying "I Love You". All right occasionally, but easy to overdose on.
As for "how does it go", I'd love to assist you but I have blanked its awfulness from my mind...

I had Billie Piper's album

My friend still does. And I bought Geri Halliwell's first solo effort, too... and liked it...
Anyone remember a song from years back called, um, Liquid Dreams? *snigger*
Yay, I've thought of more stuff I hate... get ready for a massive tirade

R'n'B sucks today. It used to be good but they've taken the blues out of it and made it into another mindless branch of pop. Destiny's Child were particularly annoying, with their constant God-bothering in their interviews and lyrics ("I'm not going to compromise my Christianity" - who even cares?) . Plus they did a song called Nasty Girl, that was basically telling a girl off for wearing skimpy clothes. I guess they hadn't seen their own stage act and album covers.
In the past couple of years there's been a lot of rather irritating duets. Any two of Ja Rule, Sean Paul, J-Lo, R Kelly, Ashanti and Beyonce would get together and sing yet another mid-tempo R'n'B-hip hop love duet. Notice the way these people have to sing their own names in their songs, or get someone else to rap it? So people can work out which identikit performer they're listening to at the moment...
I also nominate every single, yucky song from "The Sound Of Music"

Let me take you on Siren's Nightmare Tour down memory lane, where the ghosts of (thankfully) forgotten melodies linger in the air...
"Liquid Dreams, my Liquid Dreams
Waterfalls and streams, these liquid dreams.""Ice ice baby!""All the things she said, running through my head...""Mmm bop do be do ba doo bop""Mambo number Five!"
"E's are good, E's are good... he's Ebeneezer Goode...""Oh Mickey you're so fine, you're so fine you blow my mind, hey Mickey! Hey Mickey""Bob the Builder - can we fix it?
Bob the Builder - YES WE CAN!"

Oh help, I just remembered something. We had to sing this AWFUL song for our GCSEs called Generosity and Love. The tune wasn't bad but oh my God the words...
"Travel life's road light
Try not to hold the world too tight
It's alive my friend
The pain will come back to you in the end
Give it all away
Have nothing left at the end of the day
When the sun goes down
You can't take it with you when you go
Like a butterfly let it land
Rest in the palm of your hand
Free..ee...ee to take flight
Elegant in the light
Of Generositeeeeee... aaaand... Luuuuhve!"
It's exactly like every other "love yourself and be nice" song you've ever heard, isn't it? Amazing how some people can write a whole song without stumbling across one original thought. I've never come across this song before or since, not that I've exactly been looking for it, and I suspect my (otherwise brilliant) music teacher wrote it. I was squirming with embarrassment all through singing it. Of course the rest of my class loved the song to bits...

Have you ever tried to create music using technology? I have the utmost respect for anyone who can create great music using music tech, its incredibly difficult. I used to think the same thing about DJs, that theyre not 'really' musicians, and then I tried it myself. What these people do is no less credible than playing a 'real' instrument, its just the tools are different. There is a great deal of talent in these genres, its just that most of us dont recognise it. Music technology takes years to master in much the same way as an instrument does.
Anyways, back to the topic.........songs I hate......mmmm yellow submarine by the beatles, and anything Charlotte Church sings, she has an uncanny ability to murder every song she attempts.

Lol... I hate the Hayley Westenra image, you know that wide-eyed innocence that makes mums and grannies all over the world go "ahh how sweet" and wish their own teenage girls were like that. Give me a singer with some backbone any day, someone who's not afraid to offend a few people (and not in the "Charlotte Church's T shirt" way either). I also prefer singers to be independent artists who know a bit about the music they're performing, rather than little pop stars singing songs their agents taught them. She does have a good voice though. I have a problem... I like her album, bits of it anyway, but every time I get the CD out her wishy-washy little face looks up at me and really puts me off the music. Should I make a new cover for it or something?

I really struggle to see what people enjoy in rap, but maybe I'm just getting old.
My husband absolutely HATES Bohemian Rhapsody. Once, after a mild disagreement, I decided to wind him up, and I sent him a text message "Scaramooshe, scaramooshe, can you do the fandango" and he couldn't get the tune out of his head for hours! Talk about mental torture. I haven't had the heart to do it to him again!

Im sorry, but Pokarekare Ana is sooooo boring. Can't stand it!!!
I've just thought of something else to add to the list - a 3 part choral song called 'A la Cart'.
Here are the words -
'Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
Had a lovely little go cart
He took it out
Without a word
and rode it all around Salzburg
But as he hurtled down the Strausse
His Papa Leopold came after
He said 'my boy, get off that toy
Go home at once and write a symphony or two!'
Then Sister Nan came running double quick,
She said 'Papa, the harpsichord's been nicked,
Last night, twas swiped,
Poor brother Wolfgang will break his heart
...............and I cant be bothered writing the rest it's such a load of c**p!!!!!!!!!!!!

There's something that bothers me about her too. She sounds like a machine (or at least her recordings do) - when I saw her sing live she didn't sound so good - kept singing out of tune, yet on the CD her voice sounds like it's been digitally retuned to the point of sounding fake. When I first saw the adverts for her CD & they spoke about "the beautiful sound of..." my immediate response was "autotune!" LOL
Her vibrato sounds like it was "drawn" in afterwards too. Not nice.

Oh dear... Billie Piper.... Have to say I quite liked 'Honey to the Bee' (judge me if you will). Fair play to her though, I loved Doctor Who!
Here's a song that bugs the life out of me. An old jazz standard call 'Misty'. If someone knows a GOOD version of that I'll be impressed. It's just soppy turgid whining. If people ask me to sing it my face spasms. Perhaps it needs a revamp, a new tempo....new words....hmmm, perhaps even a new tune?
Cheeky Girls should be hung drawn and quartered for heretic crimes against music.
Oh and Russell Watson's version of Bohemian Rhapsody. In the background you just about hear Freddie Mercury spinning in his grave.
