i sometimes come across so horrible music by certain composers... which is the worst piece of music in the world?

Depends what you mean by bad... if you mean, horrible to listen to, that has to be something by Webern, Schoenberg, etc... something atonal at least... I don't understand what that is all about- interesting idea, but why pursue it relentlessly when it obviously doesn't work?
I also think a lot of Minimalist music is incredibly tedious... Steve Reich, Terry Riley, Philip Glass... but a lot of people disagree with me there.
Oh, that reminds me of a joke I heard the other day...

Atonal Music is often intresting to study and sometimes to play but it is horrible to listen to, Graphic score music is horrible as well.

But isn't that the point. This kind of music (like anything) just has to be played with the right dynamics, texture and feel etc.
I love minimalist music!!

I can't say about the worst piece of music, but I can tell you the worst musical period - it's the romantic period.

why? Some of the greatest music was composed during the romantic period. How can you hate composers like chopin and liszt?Unless,of course, you were being sarcastic or something........

sorri...i haven't made it clear.... sometimes composers composed horrible music that is visibly, hearing wise boring or even technique wise...

Anything written for organ. There are some lovely pieces but I just can't stand the sound of the instrument - for some reason it just sets my teeth on edge.
Sorry if anyone here plays the organ

Hi - I do play the organ, ergo I can't agree with u. Be that as it may, what do you think of the famous Bach Toccata and Fugue - guess its the signature tune for many a horror movie.
What strikes me most about the organ though, is that one instrument can sound so contrastingly different even in the same piece - if that is what the composer's registration(s) call for.

i think the romantic period was actually one of the best periods. if u have ever heard some of the songs one for example "Valse Romantique" by Debussy i think ur opinion would change

There is no such thing as 'worst piece of music in the world'
every composer has its' reasons for their own style of music
+ its great to have a variety

whether it appeals to you or not

I actually like Toccata and Fugue, even though I can only play bits of it! Well, one bit actually.
I am impressed that the organ has so many different sounds. (I just don't seem to like any of them). My favourite keyboard instrument is the harpsichord, even though it's not so versatile - I love the sound...

I've always avoided atonal pieces because it's not a style that appeals to me (I'm a die-hard romantic) but I think they are useful things to learn to play. I just wish i could get round to it!

I used to think that atonal and minimalist music was awful but then my music teacher at school somehow managed to convince me that is was great and i really like it now!! All music is great, it just purely depends on your taste!!

Anything overplayed to death, and remixed to death at that. You hear it at functions, at the hotel lounge, at the restaurant, the airport, the library, piano shop, in pop songs, on MTV - and so on and so forth.
Here are some to get you started;
Pachelbel's Canon in D
Beethoven's Fuer Elise & Moonlight Sonata
Mozart's Rondo Alla Turca (Turkish March)
Bach's Minuet in G
Rachmaninoff's transcription of "Flight of the Bumble-Bee"
And a few others I fail to remember somehow...

No. Canon in D is definitely overplayed, leaps and bounds over Fur Elise. It's formed the basis for the whole of the MTV generation, and it's still going strong.

I guess I just don't watch MTV =P
I think of Fur Elise because that is the first song that everyone asks me if I know how to play when they find out I know piano..
OR .. its the first song other people play when they want to show everyone else they somewhat know how to play piano..

There's a piece all the non-pianists would play on the piano at my school, it didn't have a name but it was a kind of duet. The player on the left would play arpeggios of C, Am, F and G, over and over AND OVER again, while the player on the right would play:
C C C
C B A B C D
E E E
E D C D E F
G... C
A G F E F G
and etc, I can't be bothered to type the whole thing out. And of course there was "Chopsticks", which I used to like before it got annoying.
Canon in D is more overplayed than Fur Elise because of all the pop stars and rappers who have used it as the basis for their stuff. Think of Coolio (C U when U get there? Not if I C U first) and weep.

Ah thanks, I just read the creepy crawly topics... they were very entertaining! I once taught one of my own composed pieces to a beginner, it was a pretty rubbish piece actually but she insisted on learning it. Hey, someone in this forum could probably write the next annoying piano hit tune... How about a competition?

I think most of mine probably count already!! I've been having a tough time actually because I learn composition at the weekends and I am so stuck for ideas that I haven't done anything all summer... my teacher is going to be sooooo mad....
