I've been playing for 5 years, and I last did my grade 4 exam, but I'm currently working on grade 5,6 and 7 pieces, as I'm doing AS Level music, I need to be able to play grade 6 music!

I've been playing for about 8 months or so and I am doing my grade 3 in a week..... blink.gif blink.gif blink.gif

I started playing when i was in year 8 i have never done any exams although iworked my way through the pieces for the grade exams for the abrsm exams. I now really regret not having done any exams. I am probably about grade 7ish standard although i'm desperately tryin to play schumann's fantasy pieces which are on the grade 8 sylabus but on a Bb are extremely difficullt.

Are these the Opus 73 Fantasiestucke? I must confess I don't like them much.

I'm a bit confused that you say the Bb version is difficult. Most of the time, a piece is written for clarinet, and it tends to be the piano part which is transposed, rather than the clarinet part. Go on, make your pianist play in six sharps!!

As you've probably guessed from my previous posts in this thread, I'm very elderly, so off now for an afternoon nap.

Oh no, I love the Schumann, especially the last movement. Even better if you have a clarinet in A.

I started in 6th grade and I'm in 11th grade now. I'm not sure how many years that is. I've never been too fond of math. Is it 5 or 6 years. *scratches head*

It depends a lot on what musical experience you already have before starting a new instrument. Someone who is already proficient in playing other instruments is always going to progress much more quickly than a complete beginner, because a lot of the groundwork - such as note-reading, rhythm-reading, understanding what to do with phrasing, dynamics etc - has already been done.
