I think it's a good idea because there's many people who are keen on lots of different instruments, but I'm doing my best not to succomb at the moment until I'm more advanced on my clarinet wink.gif So probably count me out as a serious contender for this one....

It's just to try, skyers, you don't HAVE to take a new one up... wink.gif

Get thee behind me, you you you flute-devil you! laugh.gif

What she doesn't tell you is that she'll also lend you an instruction booklet written in a foreign language and using at least three different alphabets wink.gif.

This sounds like a really good idea. I'd love to join in, but can only help with piano which probably won't be a lot of good. I'd really love to try the flute/clarinet/oboe/guitar/bongo drums/comb & paper and anything else that I have never tried before. May I come please?

Hi nannyjay. biggrin.gif Really good to see you back! Yes, of course you can join in. It's not compulsory to bring an instrument at all - not a musical version of a bring-and-share lunch - but it is compulsory to try something new. wink.gif

My original idea was for a 'play the instrument you've never got along with' day. Quite a lot of us have a failure in our past. Mine was clarinet, which I played for six months at the age of 11. Anyone else want to admit to something?

Guitar. Not for the want of trying, but I just didn't 'click' with it, lovely instrument though it is... sad.gif

I think this is a great idea Andante. Am willing to a) bring a clarinet and a supply of 1.5 reeds for people to play, and to give advice on all things clari, and b ) to try out other instruments that other people bring. smile.gif

We've got an electric guitar for you to try Barry lol!

I don't know if I dare bring no2 to this lol!

Thats a thought.. Will there be a minimum age for us youngsters on our own? I can't see my parents willing to come with me, if they let me go.

My thoughts on this would be that the minimum age policy would be the same as at other forum events (under 18s to be accompanied). smile.gif

Yes, those were my thoughts too. But you don't have to be accompanied by parents if you can find another adult to bring you.

Didn't make that terribly clear in my last reply, apologies. Andante is quite right here. smile.gif

OK, I've consulted he-who-runs-the-calendar, and we're looking at two possible dates initially: Sunday 4th or Sunday 18th November. We've gone for Sundays because more teachers are likely to be available. Because public transport is more tricky on Sundays, we're thinking of a London venue.

A Sunday in November in London I could probably make (although the RNCM sax day is usually a sunday in November...). I have no great desire to try other instruments being well and truly smitten with my saxes (well, one of them anyway) but could bring saxes and reasonable mouthpiece/reed combinations. Actually, I've been doing a bit of mouthpiece buying and selling on ebay recently and have accumulated a collection of alto and tenor mouthpieces and ligs if any existing sax players wanted to try a different set-up...

No - I did see it and had it on my watch list but didn't bid. It looked very nice but a little more open than I really want at the moment. Plus I've bought two tenor mps in recent weeks, one I have a feeling is going to become my main piece, the other will either come in at some point or I'll resell later. I won an alto piece earlier today and have just breached my limit of only using what I had in my PayPal account as the proceeds of sales. I'd really like to try a Lawton but they do seem to get top prices.

It's a nice idea and you can certainly count us in to bring some instruments if there's one in the future which is not on a Sunday and which is further North. I won't do Sundays.

Thanks for that, Liz. If this is successful it may well spawn other similar events, and we'll bear in mind that you aren't available on Sundays. smile.gif

My restraint is the months it takes me to save for new instruments!!!

I'm about to give credit where credit is due.

In the original Take a Grade 1 challenge thread, which I started back in 2005, katyjay contributed the following:

QUOTE

Maybe something in the line of a "have a go" day might be a better bet - where people could pay a fee to experiment with a/some new instrument/s? Or an "instrument swap" where two people teach each other to play a simple tune on their instruments? With some sort of a concert at the end of the day to show the results?

I would like to officailly attribute the germination of this idea to katyjay. Obviously it was simmering in my subconscious for a couple of years. biggrin.gif

This is looking exciting! Not sure if I can cart a harp over unless someone's going from my end of the woods and can give a lift, but will definitely be adding this to my "really want to attend" list.

I think it's a great idea. Depending on venue and date I'd be interested. I'd be able to bring along a couple of spare clarinets for people to try, plus recorders and a spare alto sax. The only problem might be the date. A group I play in normally do a family concert in the morning and an evening concert on one of the Saturdays around that time of year. I don't think I'd cope with 2 concerts in Brum and this all in 1 weekend.

If there was someone there prepared to try to prove to me I can get past Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on any stringed instrument (except guitar!) or oboe I'd be more than happy.
valagai
Can newbies like me join too ? smile.gif
There are a couple of instruments I'd like to try and I can offer my bass viol, if anyone's interested smile.gif
