Did my grade 1 jazz flute today.

Much more nervous than anticipated - I felt sick ohmy.gif ph34r.gif - but survived OK.

Scales were fine. Pieces better than I'd anticipated - wasn't sure how I'd cope with improvising in front of a total stranger ohmy.gif

Quick study I was slightly disappointed in myself because I think my improv was a bit dull.

Aural tests were I think fine except that, again, I don't know how great my improvisations were in the last bit wacko.gif

Examiner was very pleasant and friendly - apparently I was his first ever jazz flute candidate! - but was giving nothing away about how well (or not) I had done... so now the waiting starts!

Anyone else taking a jazz exam this term?
andante_in_c
Well done for being the intrepid explorer, Sarah. biggrin.gif Glad it went well.

blush.gif thanks laugh.gif

Now it's just the waiting game ohmy.gif - the worst bit! ph34r.gif

ooh, I was only wondering the other day when your exam was!

It sounds as though you did yourself justice and I'm sure the marks will reflect that - it will be really interesting to see what sort of marks you get (and comments even more interesting), there doesn't seem to be any real yardstick for jazz exams, let alone jazz flute at the moment.

Out of interest, which pieces did you choose to play in the end?

Finger's crossed for the results!

Yes, it will be interesting! I have no idea what to expect which is a very odd feeling wacko.gif I'm naturally interested from a "what did I get, tell me now!" point of view, but also very intrigued from a teaching/just wondering what they expected point of view...

I did St James Infirmary, Moonglow, and Everything That Lives Laments in the end. Last one was a no-brainer, it was a definite from the word go, the others were basically those that I felt happiest with by the time the exam wasn't too far away. I was reasonably pleased with all my improvisations, though of course now I can barely remember what I did ohmy.gif - & I've been practising trying new stuff and getting away from "tried and tested" to experiment, so I hope that came across in my performances...

Who says I can improvise for sax.....? unsure.gif
I will be entering with Trinity and the pieces I will be doing......well only 1 includes a little bit of improvisation (should be okay). I have also taken the option of playing an extra piece instead of scales *relief*.
sarah-flute
A jazz exam with almost no improv? Weird. What grade is it? Good luck with it.

Thanks Jane biggrin.gif

grade 7... laugh.gif My sax. teacher thinks I can manage it......yeah right! rolleyes.gif . He knows what i'm like on flute, but it doesn't mean I can play like that on sax. lol

I think i'm going to have to work really hard! btw, I am preparing for it - only decided to go ahead with it just recently. Pieces look good! smile.gif

I did ask if there was any improv in the aural or any other part and apparently it's just in the piece i'm doing unsure.gif .

thanks.
sarah-flute
Oh right... I had it in my head that the Trinity jazz exams had improv in them.

Have fun working for it anyway biggrin.gif
