Hi everyone!
I'm going to take the grade 7 singing exam in December. I've taken several piano exams but this will be my first singing exam. My question is about the singing at sight part. Does the examiner give the tonic triad before you sing?
Thanks

ive not done a grade 7 exam, but for my other graded exams the examiner has always given the chord and starting note, before the sight singing begins

I haven't done Grade 7, but I did Grade 5 a couple of months ago and they certainly gave the tonic triad then... my guess is they always give it.

I'm 16. Yup, my first singing exam. If any of you have advice about anything, it would be greatly appreciated. I've wanted to take a singing exam for a while now but I couldn't because of time, teacher conflicts, etc. I've been in voice lessons and choir for a long time though. I live in the US by the way. ABRSM exams aren't nearly as popular here as they are in the UK. When you say ABRSM to someone here, they just look at you kind of funny and say "what's that?".

Hey...
I just wondered, have you done any ABRSM theory or jazz exams? In the UK you have to do grade 5 at one of those, before they even let you take a grade 6-8 practical... could be different in the US though, I don't know what the rules are over there. Good luck anyway

what songs are you doing?

I've done grades 1-5 theory and grades 3,4,and 6 piano and I'm working on grade 8. We have the same rule here. I'm not sure what songs I'm doing. See, my piano teacher is our local rep and she wanted me to take voice lesson with her, but I'm already in lessons with someone else. So my piano teacher picked out songs for me but I don't like a couple of them and she won't be teaching me so I'm going to pick different ones. I'll probably do the ones she picked for list A and D, Bist Du Bie Mir and Somewhere. I'm not sure about the others though. What grades have you done? Any suggestions for songs to sing?

I love both your choices! "Somewhere" is such a great song, and if I was doing the exam I'd either choose Lascia ch'io pianga from list A, or Amarilli mia bella, or else Bist du bei mir... "Die Lotusblume" is the only song I've heard of in list B, but it is gorgeous. I don't know any songs in List C, but I've heard some good stuff by Warlock and Vaughn Williams so you could check them out.
But hey, just do songs you like and enjoy singing. It's you that has to sing them, not your piano teacher
I'm grade 5... so far. I started off as a pianist but then got into singing 2 years ago, which is why my singing grades are lower than my piano grades...
Have fun.

Thanks! I've actually decided not to do gr 7 in December but to do gr 8 in the Spring instead. I wouldn't have enough time to spend on it this semester. I did a gr 8 piece last year and I'm learning gr 8 aurals for piano anyway, so hopfully I'll do ok. Any suggestions for grade 8 pieces?

Grade 8! Good luck
There's some great songs in List D... the stuff by Gershwin and Kern is particularly good, you can really have fun with that.

also did Una Donna A Quindici Anni (Mozart), An Die Nachtigall (Brahms) and A Hymn to the Virgin (Rubbra)... i was 15... i still sing those pieces now, i really really loved them!
my advice is to go for singing something that you really enjoy - you can't put as much expression into it otherwise.
good luck!
