I couldn't imagine being anything like good enough to put a vid of my playing up there. Not for a while yet anyway!! Or perhaps I should do one of my open strings' specials!!!!!!
Anything is allowed on youtube Elisabeth, so go for it

I thought I'd bump this to the top, seeing as we have new folk joining the forum who may have stuff to add. Here's a couple of new ones from me and my tutor in the meantime:
Me - Amaryllis.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDyRqooQk2oAlso, here's a film I put together with my new movie software, starring my tutor Glenda. We did this epecially for St Davids Day, which was about a fortnight ago. It's only my third attempt at editing a film ever - any pointers much appreciated. Hopefully I got the emphasis on all things Welsh just right.

By the way, How are you getting on with that Joanna Newsom stuff? I'm still struggling away at it

I dabbled with some familiar parts of Cosmia and Sprout and the Bean, then gave up. It's way above my level right now, and was demotivating me more than anything. However, the links are safely stored away and I might come back to them in a year or so.

Hey, nice vid!!
Some of the pics could have been taken from my garden (sheep, hillsides with heather [+slate waste etc!]), but others reminded me of 3 years at college in Cardiff followed by 3 years living just north of Caerphilly.
Nice piece as well - my daughter is learning this now, but only just started it a few weeks ago, so has a way to go as yet. Think it will sound better on her new harp (second-hand but only a few years old), as 1) she now has a 47-string harp and 2) it is a Sinfonietta with an extended soundboard. The difference in sound over the 40-string Daphne is phenomenal! Can't wait until she can play this properly - it's just such a memorable piece that I could sing the opening bars to hubby after not hearing it for well over 2 years, so he could know which piece it was.
Watched your Amaryllis too - you are improving really quickly - keep it up!!

Here are a couple of videos my brother and I made in a hurry this morning. Please excuse the terrible intonation and slightly off harmonics towards the end of the Meditation clip, it's a while since I've played it

! With the Scottish one, there's no picture, but I think you can hear it!
Oooh very nice!! I'm not a violinist (although I very much want to be and hopefully will be very soon

) but it sounded pretty good to me!! How long have you been playing?
QUOTE(Mark the Harp @ Sep 24 2007, 09:39 PM)

I've got some too - not "classical" but here goes:
Carolan: Si Bheag Si Mhor on Pilgrim gut-strung lever harp
Squire Wood's Lamentation on the Refusal of his Halfpence (you've got to learn a piece with a title like that)
La Partida - by FM Alvarez on a Paraguayan harp
Carolan's Dream on Pilgrim gut-strung lever harp
All my own arrangements and a lot of fun to do. I only totalled about 49 bluebells making the first of these.
Mark
Wow these are all really really good!! I especially love the Carolan's Dream one

Thanks...I've deleted all but one of those now, they really were awful!
I've been playing for 6 years and had an amazing teacher for 3 of those (which makes a great difference imo). Will attempt to post another one soon.

There are a couple more now.

I can see why it can be useful to record/film yourself - I'm totally horrified by my right wrist, not really having watched myself play before.

Yes, exactly! I constantly refer to my own vids to refine my technique. I found it particularly useful to get on top of an annoying habit of pulling my wrist up to pluck, when I should have been flicking my fingers into my palm. I'm using them at the moment to help identify why I get horrible buzzing with my left hand technique.
I recommend everyone film themselves playing and watch it back. It's a real eye-opener!

I am on week 7 with this latest video, I am definitely improving. In this latest vid I have dropped the strings at the nut to less than 1mm it makes a world of difference to the tone although I must add the vids on youtube and recording on my camera don't do the sound justice, having said that it doesn't hide my beginner intonation
I have adjusted my grip to a less tense thumb and finger which is similar to the grip one would use when picking a ripe strawberry, this has taken ALL the tension out of my thumb/palm muscle. I just have to remember not to slip back into the old grip. I have noticed also that when the tone suffers it is usually caused by my bow angle. This mostly happens with unfamiliar pieces.

I have to say that the sound quality on youtube is terrible, or is it my microphone?? and no, I am not trying to make excuses for my bad playing

but my violin does sound more 'tinny' and more like toy then it does in real life!
oh, and don't I move a lot whilst playing???? I felt sea sick watching my video!!! LOL

I think it's your microphone. Thats the first thing I thought when I was listing was that you need a better microphone! lol. But you did really well and you are so much braver than me! I could never record myself playing, believe me I tried and I went 'squeek, squeek squeek' as soon as the record button was on.

Sorry, not happening! I did record myself on my phone, but the microphone is so terrible it sounded dreadful, I may be as far as it is possible to be from being a virtuoso, but I know I don't sound that bad, I mean really! So that was promptly deleted.
To the best of my knowledge, there is only one video of me playing: made in January this year, playing Bach, and it's BAD, so it will not be seen on YouTube. (Also my technological abilities are such that I'm not sure I would be able to work out how to upload a video anyway!)
I also have one recording (again made on my phone) of me attempting to sing Habanera from Carmen. Bearing in mind I had a cold, was sitting down, was recording it in the living room with my phone, was singing it unaccompanied without the words or music in front of me, and I've never had singing lessons, it wasn't bad. But it's still rubbish, and it won't be going on YouTube!
Well done everyone else for being much braver than me!
