Hi all

As a learner on the harp I have found it useful to film myself, and create a video diary of my progress. Also, by putting the clips on Youtube I've been able to invite other harpists to watch and give me hints and tips. It's been pretty positive so far.

Here are a couple of my clips:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ju4I78AhusQ

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=E79zfQScaHM

Also, just for fun, here's a superb classical guitar clip:

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=YQcuQsD587M

There's more stuff on there, alldated - you can see how over the last few months I've improved.

Anyway, I was wondering if any of you have done the same, and have any clips you'd like to share? Please post them here if you have!

I have several clips of me playing.

I just wanted to see if i was holding the instrument right and how I sounded.

I find them too shameful to share.

I play Violin.

I would not be embarrassed by other adult learners seeing it but opening it to the world wide web would be bit shameful.

Quincy, we can't 'make you', but all I wanted to say:
we have all been there (playing with lots of screeches and scratches etc)
don't think that everybody else was perfect the moment they picked up the instrument!
and if you are too 'shameful' because of your hair etc not looking good on video then equally, don't think that we get out of bed looking all pristine in the morning laugh.gif laugh.gif

Now the 'ball is in your court'
we'd love to share your videos but only if you want to.
This thread is making me want to do some as well! ohmy.gif ohmy.gif ohmy.gif

Here are a couple of videos my brother and I made in a hurry this morning. Please excuse the terrible intonation and slightly off harmonics towards the end of the Meditation clip, it's a while since I've played it ph34r.gif! With the Scottish one, there's no picture, but I think you can hear it!

Ok then. If I can figure out how to use youtube and upload clips.

If/ when I do, please be kind. I've only be learning since Feb/March.

I don't speak ONE WORD of Welsh, can't even say hello, so here'S my "guaranteed wrong" super-loose guesslation of the lyrics to Pianola's Os Na Wei... song.

If You Don’t Leave Now
Tell, tell, tell me what you’re thinking
Tell me, tell me, what’s stopping you?
I tell you, I tell you, he won’t care if you go
Tell me I can come in, say the word and you’re free

Come, come, take a step [on your own feet]
Come, come, ?find? peace for a while
Come, come, let me take your hand
Come, come, come with me and leave him

Listen, listen, there’s something called freedom
Listen, listen, ??there's a place always silent??
Listen, let me tell you, find a better life
Listen, let me tell you, you could get far enough away

I know what the story will be, if you don’t leave now
Still in your nightmare, you stagger and turn

Hi guys, me again!

I've been busy this evening. My tutor is making her first foray onto Youtube, and I filmed three short pieces for her this evening. I'd like to share them with you:

and my personal favourite:

As this is her first time on Youtube could you take a moment to add a comment and a nice rating? She would be so chuffed!!!

Cheers all!

Great stuff! How long ago were these filmed? Are you still doing work for S4C?

I loved all the stuff posted by you guys - it's great to see such a nice mix of learner and experienced musician alike!

Talking of learner musicians, here's my latest Youtube clip. Pencerdd in Cardiff kindly lent me my first pedal harp, a lovely blue Camac. I used it to play 'The Purple Bamboo'. I play it very slowly, but I like it's simplicity:

Hello Shaolin_monkey!

Yes, I still do work for S4C from time to time mainly with the Brigyn brothers.
The clips with the black harp were done about 3 months ago down in Cardiff. The first clip however was done a couple of years ago.

I know of your harp teacher and enjoyed the u-tube clips of both of you.
Keep up the good work with the harp!

My daughters on youtube and I expected loads of disparaging comments, but not the case, either nice or supportive. I'm amazed that over 1,500 people have seen the frist clip I uploaded. Even the vids of her messing on big Sis's Clarinet have received good ratings and she's only played it about 6/7 times.

Hey Pianola, the Brigyn boys live about 3/4 mile down the lane from us. Nice lads, I remember them playing in the second half of a fundraising concert (as Epitaff) where my two daughters were singing with their primary school. My two have just finished Bl. 7 and Bl 9, so it was probably about 3-4 years ago.

Ynyr also taught in the Rygarug sessions my elder daughter attended a couple of years ago on multimedia stuff - she got to bring home sometimes a Mac notebook, which was really impressive in its capabilities.

Hubby filmed her playing her grade 4 pieces in about Oct last year (she took the exam in March), so if I can get her permission, I might put something up for her. The resulting DVD went into England to my side of the family, since we don't often take the harp with us when visiting...!

Syrinx! I wanted to put it up with a picture but I didn't realise how it worked so it went a bit wrong....

Anyway it's already on the recording site but I put it on youtube too.

Just realised this is in viva strings. D'oh. Sorry.

Hi all, me again! Good to see this thread is so active - keep it going!

Here's another contribution from me. Did anyone go see the 100 Harp Orchestra in the foyer of the Millenium Centre in Cardiff today? It was to open the 8th European Harp Symposium, this year being held in Wales.

If not, don't worry - I've uploaded loads of clips onto youtube this evening! This one is probably the best. If you see a lady in green/turqouise, that's my tutor Glenda!

She's a fantastic player, but that's a rubbish transcription of Classical Gas. The first line melody is (B) C B C A C not that funny arpeggio thing she plays. Compare the original.

I've got some too - not "classical" but here goes:

Carolan: Si Bheag Si Mhor on Pilgrim gut-strung lever harp
Squire Wood's Lamentation on the Refusal of his Halfpence (you've got to learn a piece with a title like that)
La Partida - by FM Alvarez on a Paraguayan harp
Carolan's Dream on Pilgrim gut-strung lever harp

All my own arrangements and a lot of fun to do. I only totalled about 49 bluebells making the first of these.

Wow, they're great! I particularly liked La Partida - such a distinctive sound!

For the first time in an age I've posted two new clips on Youtube. I'm chipping away at the harp, slowly and carefully. I've made a bit of progress, as I hope you will see from the following:
