I just got the Ferling 48 studies for sax, after seeing it recommended on here and other sax forums. It looks quite good as a study book with some variety, perhaps worth the £22 it cost ohmy.gif

Who else has used this book? I've done up to about study 7 so far, when I've more time I'll carry on. What are others experiences of this method. Useful or not?

I've got this book, have studied a few of them. It's what I need to do over the summer - go from start to finish. The ones at the end look fiercely difficult though.

It's in my shopping basket on musicroom smile.gif Then again...so are 20 other pieces of music tongue.gif

I've got this and use it for the oboe. I bought it second hand (but unused) for considerably less than you. I have played only the slow ones (and not even all of those yet) in an attempt to improve my tone. My teacher believes that the slow ones are actually more demanding than the fast ones (if you play them musically). The first one (in C major) is apparently often one of the required works when auditioning for orchestras in France.

I also have a copy which I'm working through at the moment (on the oboe). I picked mine up for less than £10 new but that was in the early 90's.

I've played the fast and slow studies...both are demanding...but the slow studies are great for working on tone and control. My teacher reckons that they should be agonising...!!!
I've come to the conclusion that by the time I've reached the end of the book I should just about be ready to play them properly. biggrin.gif biggrin.gif

Sorry a but off topic, but does anyone know if the exercises in the Mule edition for saxophone are exactly the same as the oboe one (apart from the extra exercices)? In other words would the Mule one be usable for an oboe audition/exam situation?
Scaramouche
I think so yes. Last year when I was waiting for my copy to be delivered, I used a copy that my oboist friend had and it was the same as far as I could tell.

This maybe of help, the man who edited the Ferling is a charming man called Martin Schurring who is a lecturer in the USA, his web pages may help and if not you can e mail him, he's awfully nice..you may visit his website ://www.public.asu.edu/~schuring/main.htmlhttp and see what help that maybe to you.

Kindest regards

I don't know how they sit on the sax, but they are excellent oboe studies. Exacting but thats sometimes what one needs.
