I've just been reading about perfect and relative pitch. I know i definitely dont have perfect pitch and i dont think i have relative pitch either. can you train your ear to gain relative pitch or am i a complete failure as a musician and should just give up now?!

Eeeeeekkkkk!!

Sorry to sound like a record with a crack in it (yuk, that really shows my age!) but, YES, of course you can learn relative pitch and the best way is through systematic Kodaly training.

I just wish we didn't have the assumption in this country that you can either 'do' music or you can't. It's like any other subject - yes, you always have people who find it all incredibly natural and easy, but what about those who don't?

Just because one child learns to read as easily as breathing, does it mean that we consider the rest of the class unable to read?? NO! We TEACH them to read!

So let's start TEACHING aural awareness, sight-singing skills, good relative pitch - and reap the benefits that this confidence will bring to the budding musician!

Sorry, Jess, I've got on my soapbox here, but as you can see, it's something I feel so strongly about...

Hang on in there - believe me, what you want IS possible!!
Oo esty oO
what is perfect pitch, exactly? huh.gif

Perfect pitch is when you know the sound of any note and can pitch and recognise them to order.

What did we do before Kodaly?

I thought Kodaly manufactures films...so I supposed we used to draw.

Um... isnt that kodak that manufactures films, whereas kodaly is a teaching method...?

I'm a little confused about what "relative pitch" is...to me, this is recognising intervals

Yes, in other words being able to find a note once you have a starting point to work from.
