Exam regulations for aurals have this to say about singing from score...I assume this is "sing from sight" from a score?

QUOTE
To sing a short melody from score, accompanied by a higher part played by the examiner, in any major or minor key up to four sharps or flats.

Please excuse my iggerance...I'm just typing up notes on Grade 8 exams for my son's Japanese violin teacher. Exam was postponed till next spring, so he's been working on etudes and scales and is just gearing up for a major summer offensive on exam preparation. However, his standard of reference is Japanese university auditions and entrance exams, not ABRSM, so while many of the topics are the same the approach is quite different.

Another question: when my son took his first Grade 5, we read through the aural book, and gathered that he would have to answer questions about the period or style of the music, but in fact, that didn't happen in either of his grade 5 exams. As the notes in the aural regulations don't say much, I'd love to know a bit more about what kind of questions the "musical features" section normally covers at grade 8.

Yes, sing at sight is what is meant. The examiner gives a few seconds for you to look through the extract first.

At Grade 8, the examiner will play the piece for the last test and the candidate is expected to talk about it. Unlike earlier grades, there are no questions set by the examiner. The candidate is expected to name the period and composer, and discuss the main musical features such as form, style, time signature, texture, rhythm, phrase structure etc.
