Lots of silly behaviour round here - panic buying of bread and petrol. We've heard today that the water could be off for 2 weeks. groan. A petrol station tried to charge someone £25 for their last bottle of water.

However, Severn Trent have been ringing the elderly and taking water round to them.

Going to the EPTA conference on Friday - Will check into hotel asap for wash and brush up!

Someone tried to do something similar during the petrol crisis a couple of years back, and when it was over everyone boycotted the station and he was out of business within 2 months.

What goes around...... wacko.gif

Anyway, have to say, I'm seriously starting to smell now desperately need a shower. Only upside is, all my students are in the same waterless situation so they smell too.

Personally, I'm quite happy to cancel lessons until the water comes back on. Many of my kiddy pupils are somewhat unsanitary at the best of times (there are several who have to wash their hands before they are allowed to play my piano - I have had mud on the keyboard more than once) I don't really want anyone outside the family in the house at the moment!

Drove from Sussex to Scotland yesterday - very glad not to have done it the day before, and having seen the flooding from the motorway, our thoughts are also with those who've been stuck in the middle of it all...

We have to do the exact opposite journey this coming Sunday - Scotland to Sussex...... unsure.gif

It's unreal watching the news reports - our thoughts are with anyone who's been affected......

If you get desperate, you have an open invitation to come to my house for a nice long bath with loads of bubbles - I'll throw in supper too! tongue.gif

Having seen some of the pictures, I'm very grateful that I don't live in Gloucester. It hasn't been good here, but for us it's mostly rainwater, whereas Gloucester has the run off from rain further up the Severn to deal with sad.gif

I can't really believe what I'm seeing and my thoughts are with everyone who's affected. I used to live in Gloucester, in Linden just off the Bristol Road and rather think my old house will be now be flooded... makes me think. Hang on in there XXX

Thanks, that is really kind. xxx

Heard on the news this evening that we came very close to losing power for the whole county, in which case they were planning to evacuate everyone, gulp. We do have family elsewhere in the country who could take us, but we would be concerned about looting. Also have 6 cats that would have to be sorted out. Hope it doesn't come to that!
sarah-flute
ohmy.gif blimey, hope that doesn't happen *gulp*

My mum said she saw on the news that the power station, or maybe it was a routing station for electrics - I forget... well anyway it was within 2 inches of getting flooded so they say ohmy.gif

I hadn't really appreciated how difficult it would be with a complete power cut - no mobile phones, no shops (tills etc out) no petrol, no water (no pumps).

Goodness knows how the hospitals are coping with just bottled water. I wouldn't fancy being ill right now..
Miss Ross
My thoughts are with all of the forum members, and indeed everyone, who has been affected in any way by the floods. Last November, our village and the neighbouring town were badly flooded and many people had to be rescued. It's not an experience I would wish on anyone, and I hope that you can all stay safe and comfortable.
sarah-flute
Euch, me either ohmy.gif

edit: thanks, Miss Ross - my town has got off reasonably lightly this time round, hope it stays that way ohmy.gif

Last time round it was just rain and we ended up in a mess but Gloucester was OK I think, this time it's the other way round. But we're predicted more rain later in the week so that could be bad news for both... all of a sudden glad I live on a slightly elevated bit of ground.....

was that the power station that came within two inches of losing it ?? that was certainly a very close shave. Hoping it improves all round for everyone who's affected - not nice at all.

My thoughts are with those effected by the flooding.

Have to make my way up to Worcestershire on Sunday, hopefully things will have cleared up a bit by then. Apparently the school we're going to is OK as it's on a hill and they still have power and water, but the roads leading to it have been flooded and closed! unsure.gif

If we are flooded there will be a guy with a big boat full of animals passing by.

Collecting survivors in pairs only, presumably?

Oh Robodoc - trust you!

But seriously, we've been thinking not only about people but about the plight of animals in this situation - both farm animals and pets. No doubt some people will have lost their four-legged companions in all this.

I hope the floods don't come anywhere near you but it might be best to take precautions just in case. The water level rose quite quickly here yesterday. One of my daughter's friends had to be evacuated and didn't have enough time to save things that were important to her. The level of the water at Swinford Lock in Eynsham (just upstream of Oxford) has been above the highest flood height marker (from 1947). It is quite scary to see how fast the Thames is flowing. There just seems to be flood water everywhere.

When I went down to the river I was a bit alarmed to see how many rodents (rats, mice etc) were running around. I think their homes must have been flooded too.

Thanks for the tip-off, Purple Viola.

We're watching the river with some trepidation, and are indeed making precautions, including arranging house-watching with the neighbours so that if one or other household are out, the folks who are in can sort things.

High water is expected in the early hours of tomorrow morning.

At the moment the Environment Agency is forecasting that we won't be flooded as badly as in 2003 or even 2000. In 2003 the end of our drive and some of our garden got wet, but the house didn't.

Fingers definitely crossed, though.

The hospital I work in gets regular top ups of water. There is water for essentials, e.g. for the operating theatres etc. Bottled water is available for drinking. Only certain toilets are functioning, the others are 'out of order'. I symphathise with my colleagues who live locally - I can go home and take a bath after a hard day's work, but they can't.

I am in stroud , no flooding but have no water, we were supposed to be going on the river severn/avon this week on our boats on a holiday... my parents got there on friday am by 2pm on friday they had to abandon ship as the water was rising fast, they left strensham at 2 and got home to quedgeley in gloucester at 8pm!!!
luckily they had a frontera 4x4 so they managed to get home, fortunatley we had stayed at home to see how the weather faired, so glad we did as i dont think my 2yr old son could have stood 5+ hrs in the car.

None of us have water, i am collecting water for my parents, granparents and my self. I went to sainburys to get some water - my main concern being my baby boy, and people were pushing past me and my son to get the water, people were loading their trollies high i only managed to get afew bottles as i didnt want to leave Ewan in the trolley whilst i jumped in to get water.

There are bowsers locally but mainly empty.

My hubby and Dad have been going to strensham regularly to help rescue boats and sort them out.

Im just glad we have our house as many now have nothing, so i think afew days without water is no hardship.

My trumpet teacher got flooded out in 1998 when we had the bad floods and bless him he still kept my lesson on, i just had to go across some fields with my wellies. it was terrible. he has since moved so i hope he is ok. as i no longer have lessons.

this is our boats from a distance.

Just wondered if everybody was back to normal, or is anyone still left with major work needing to be done to their house due to being flooded? Has all the flood water subsided in the areas mostly badly affected?
SueHM
Just got our drinking water back today. Not sure I trust it 100%. Will probably stick with bottled for another day or two. Lots of people I know have been flooded...

Hope it's back to normal now.... it must have all been an dreadful experience.
sarah-flute
It's pretty much back to normal round me, but then we weren't that badly affected *phew*.

We saw a bowser in Charlton Kings today, don't know if it was still being used.

The river was very high when we went over on the bridge in Gloucester, but the fields were no longer flooded, although clearly wet and still puddled in places. It no longer smells driving past Gloucester as it apparently did last week (well, smells no more than usual tongue.gif wink.gif only joking).

There was at least one business, a restaurant quite near the river, that still was clearly closed down, one assumes due to the floods.

In the village where my mum lives, the road surface and the sides of the bridge have been washed away - so that particular stretch of road is closed. However that isn't unusual after a bad flood as the bridge is quite low over the Leadon and the road surface damage has happened before.

Two people actually got stuck in the flooding over the river and were stuck for 2 hours before they got rescued. Their lives were likely saved by the recent smoking ban, as the person who heard their shouts, saw them and eventually helped to rescue them, only did so because he had to step outside the pub in order to have a cigarette...
