Hi all - just wondering if you had any suggestions of any books to use with young children for improving technique on recorder.

Students have completed Grade 2 with very good mark. Have solid basis.

Have been googling but not really sure what to be looking for - would love to hear what you all use as I trust your input.

It is rather difficult to make suggestions for you without knowing tha ages of your pupils. Grade two students could be anywhere between seven and fourteen. Perhaps 50 Graded Studies for Descant Recorder by Sally Adams and Paul Harris might suit them. I would also suggest some of the easy Keuning studies and lots of repertoire pieces to learn as well.. When a study introduces a new skill it is a good idea to follow it up with some pieces that include the same technique and some scale and arpeggio work based on it too. For example: A study in playing quaver runs slurred in pairs might be helped by playing some easy scales in the same way and then finding a piece that includes similar patterns too. Folk music and songs are worth playing with school groups as the phrasings are usually obvious and the range so often fits the soprano recorder without transposition. Sorry not to be of more help. If you tell us whether these are for use in groups or in individual lessons, and the ages of your pupils we might have more ideas.

Sorry for not been more clear - was a bit tired when writing the post and not completely focused.

The two boys are 11 going on 12 and they have their lesson together.

Good Intentions
Hi Organgrinder,

to be fair I am not the best person to give advice as I have only restarted recorder in the past few weeks however my trips to amazon have been useful click the link below, there are quite afew books listed, and the difficulty range seems to vary, so I hope you have some luck. If you see one you like the look of you could google the title author and reviews and see what you get.
I realise I could have done this, but I am helpful - not a saint. wink.gif

I would not use a technique textbook for pupils of this age but would use scales and arpeggios, studies and pieces, and lots of duets too. The Keuning studies are as good as any and there are so many albums of pieces from which to choose that it would really depend on what you fancy.
