Just wondering because I have never composed anything before and am starting GCSE Music this year. I have a feeling I'm not gonna like it!

Is Viva Voice really the right place to ask if people like composing?

I found it hard. In my G5 Music Theory I only got 10 out of 15. I got those kind of marks in practice papers anyway!

I HATE composing!!! I done it in music class a few times and it always come out rubbish cos in the end i just end up writing down anything, just a mixture of notes and rests and hope it comes out ok. I DO NOT want to do it for my GCSEs and wish i hadn't have chosen it now cos i really really hate it.

Don't sweat it too much about composing. As a rule most people aren't particularly happy with their compositions at GSCE and even A-level, even if they get full marks about it. Composing something amazing isn't something that happenes very often, and at national exam level they're looking for ability at your age level, not ability when compared to the greats.
If it also makes you feel any better, I've written only one composition in my life that I'm not hideously ashamed of

Just because I'm not hideously ashamed of it doesn't mean I've had it published!

Yeah, well done! i got a A for GCSE. i think you have to choose some instruments that you are comfortable with for the composition, i really enjoyed writing for string quartet because i play the violin in one, but then my teacher told me to write one for a brass ensemble, and i hated it!

I just love composing! It's great fun developing your own "style"(like, if you hear a piece of Bach, then you probobly will, if you have heard some works written by him, that it's he who made that particular piece that you're listening to. This is also the case of any other composer, as each and every one of them has an own "style").
I'm currently writing a concerto for flute

I like composing, coz you get to ignore all the "rules" that you get taught about music! well.. most of them!

And you can experiment. The only thing is, is that nice concord harmony sounds nice, so people write in it. But I got told to write for piano in a 20th century style, and really liked it, because it was different, and anything seemed to work!
