I suppose in theory you could be, say, a full-time teacher of piano, but the instrument you enjoy playing the most is the violin. I would say your primary instrument would still be the piano. Similarly you could be an orchestral musician on, say, clarinet, but prefer playing the piano for pleasure - I would say the clarinet is the primary instrument. But having said that, it's up to the individual to decide what they consider to be their primary instrument if they play more than one wink.gif
meerkat
Voted guitar (classical) but am torn between that and cello.

Ahh OK. Well I guess the flute fits into both those definitions, mostly... so that's OK! (on bad days of course it gets relegated to "instrument I am rubbish at and hate with a passion!" wink.gif)

(Violin I have been playing for somewhat longer, but in terms of skill and enjoyment I'm afraid it'd still lose out!)
Miss Ross
I voted for violin. I don't think any other instrument could ever take the place it seems to have acquired in my heart, and I really don't know where I'd be now if I hadn't taken it up. biggrin.gif
sarah-flute
Awwww... great reasons to play an instrument! biggrin.gif

Favourite: organ
Spend most time working on: organ
Highest exam pass: clarinet
Play most confidently: flute
Perform with most regularly: voice
Been playing the longest: piano

I voted organ, cos it's the one I'm most serious about and the one I love best, even though (or maybe partly because?) it's a tough challenge to learn.
It's not the thing I play best at the moment, but I hope that one day it will be.

I think flute has taken over from piano as my primary instrument. I definetly enjoy it more.
BBTOTW
Same, piano used to be my first instrument but now my flute's taken over smile.gif

Nope, I'm better at the woodblock Sarah. laugh.gif

I've put piano because it's the instrument I have been playing consistently the longest and also the one which I have the highest certificate in. Voice is a very close second and may end up overtaking, too soon to say yet smile.gif
oboist
Well, with a name like oboist I could hardly vote double bass could I?!! laugh.gif

Oboe, oboe, oboe, oboe, oboe......!! I LOVE MY OBOE!!! party2.gif yay.gif yay.gif woot.gif hurrah.gif clap.gif

Got the message.....?!! smile.gif smile.gif wink.gif
Sergeant_Chronos
Well I play Tuba and Bassoon but now I have to play tuba for marching band. (At the level my schoo is at, tuba's never have to play anything difficult) I love solos though, like Siegfried which I got a one on happy.gif

Of course piano is best - not that I am biased either!!!!!!!!!
Pizzicato Bassist
Are there any more double bass players or is it just me?
Fibi
No viola players seem to be voting either. sad.gif

I seem to be playing recorder a lot more than viola these days, but I'd still consider it my main instrument - it's certainly the one I'd be most proficient on and my favourite overall wub.gif

Hmm.. why do I get the feeling that the first example given refers to me? laugh.gif
Actually I enjoy both depending on the mood. Piano because I'm better at it, and violin because I want to get better at it! Anyway, since you say that, I voted for the piano. And it does seem a lot of people started on the piano first.

I think a larger than average proportion of violists have it as a (scuse the pun) second string instrument. I do (Sorry!) therefore voted flute.

My oboe wins every time... party2.gif yay.gif hurrah.gif
I just love it!!!! wub.gif
Who could want to play anything else??

***now deafened by all everyone else on here except oboist***

I remember reading somewhere, some years ago, that the most popular instrument for graded exams was the piano, followed by the violin, with flute and clarinet fighting it out for 3rd and 4th. smile.gif

Can I remember where it was I saw this? Unfortunately not...
chrisgs
Instrument I've been playing the longest - piano, main and favourite instrument - the soprano cornet!
pianocelloflute
Piano, but with three competing for second place at the moment! biggrin.gif
pianoboe
Piano wub.gif don't know what I'd do without it
HazelKay
Flute - how do you all learn more than one?!! rolleyes.gif
Reverie
Flute, then piano (just!)

I have a very unoriginal combination of instruments evidently...
fluterocks
Um:
Instrument played for longest: In general, recorder- whichever one it may be
Instrument best at: Flute
Instrument enjoyed most at: dunno, love them both!probably flute, but depends on what kind of day i've had!
Highest grade passed on: Flute, easy cus i haven't done any recorder ones...always intended, never actually got round to doing them...maybe one day

Well...... we're all a bit of a melting pot, aren't we.

Been playing longest - piano
Teacher's dip. - french horn

mellow.gif There are sooooo few of us wee brassys around, aaaahhhhh

Teach - brass (Very FEW pupils I'm sorry to say)
and upper strings - greater numbers each year
and piano/electric keyboard - most pupils

I have very little opportunity to play brass really unless I work away myself. Much more inclined to pop into the music shop and buy piano music, y'know? Bit of the old story, I can sit up at the piano for 5-10 mins now and again and work up a wee piece over time.

ANYWAY...

lizbun
Well, I think it's going to be Oboe soon, but at the moment, its Piano.
DaisyChain
My piano definitely...I'd hate to be without it now. wub.gif

Followed by voice, clarinet and recorder. smile.gif
andante_in_c
Don't know.

Flute, by all accounts, as I teach it, and have studied it longest and at the highest level.

But I was disconcerted by someone asking me yesterday whether recorder was my 'first' instrument (having heard me play both flute and recorder).

I'm more relaxed with recorder, certainly.

My favourite? Currently voice, followed by recorder, followed by flute and piano. ph34r.gif
YetAnotherPianist
Piano, as the name suggests smile.gif.
liebe_klavier

4. Instrumnet played for the "shortest" years: organ (2.5 years)

SarahSax1986

lizbiz23

Based on what I chose as my primary study at teacher training college on music specialist course and what I love most, Piano, based on what I do best, Singing.

Do best - Singing joint second study at TTC
Love most - Piano first study at TTC
Played the most - Viola joint second study switch from Violin at TTC
Compulsory at TTC - Guitar, useless!
Compulsory at TTC - Recorder, interesting!
Want to learn - Cello
Want to learn - Tenor Sax or Bassoon but no hopes of getting an embouchure ohmy.gif
MissJones
Fav/Most played in groups: Trombone (because they're in demand... unlike flutes... and to be honest, they get a much cooler part. And it's more fun being in the brass section, you must admit)

Most practice: Piano (coz it's there and I can just sit down and play)

Started learning first: Flute wink.gif
