any christian pianists out there??

and who love to play worship music??

coz i am and i love to play worship music, and for the past 2 or 3 years or so its what ive enjoyed playing most, even though ive done grade 8 and love to play jazz/blues.

i know music is music, and the words make it christian or otherwise, but i just think theres so much wondeful music in christian circles that doesn't get enough attention worldwide!

anyone agree??

hello! biggrin.gif
I'm from a christian family and we've just joined a new church. They have a music worship group there and the leader said that i could join in September. I play piano and drums. At my old church, all they played was traditional hymns. I've got nothing against them but they can get a bit boring after a while. dry.gif Also the majority of the congregation were old people so i don't think they would have known any new hymns. Now at this new church it's the complete opposite! biggrin.gif I hardly know any of the hymns because they're mostly new ones but i'm learning!! smile.gif the style of most of the hymns is kind of pop/rock but still carry messages of God and stuff! smile.gif i think there is a person called kenneth graham (or something like that!) and some of his stuff it good. i suppose people who are from other religions will probably think that their music is wonderful as well. i agree that hymns aren't recognised enough (maybe cos they're seen as old fashioned or something!) rolleyes.gif

I played piano/organ/keyboard for my local church for a number of years and really enjoy the modern christian music - I think a lot of older people like it as well even if they do still prefer the traditional stuff. There are some really good composers such as Graham Kendrick, Chris Bowater, Marion Baker and loads more. There are also some good hymn books from Spring Harvest which have brilliant jazz/rock arrangements of some of the old traditional hymns as well as new ones. I agree that good christian music is not recognised enough but things are improving slowly I think.

Yep

I've played piano in a service once and I play sax in the morning service every week.

The soul survivor song books are really good although most of them onil have chords and words but no tune. Oh and tim hughes latest album is great.

My church has good music as well! The main pianist guy is amazing - you just give him some chords and he can make it sound great. we have some brilliant musicians in our music group.

Is it just me, or is every christian worship song in G/Em?!

I've recently started playing the hymns at church (not on the organ yet tho), because the man that used to do it is getting too old sad.gif I also used to play the hymns in assembly at my old school when I was younger, but they were quite basic as I was about 9ish at the time.

Check out the Christmas Carols - I think youll find that mosT of them are in F! Choral arrangements anyway....

Anyone play in an orchestral type group in church, rather than guitars / drums type of group? (If you know what I mean) dry.gif

at my old church our worship group was piano/keyboard, flute (played by someone who...won't be the next James Gallway?) and my sister and i on violins. so you could say that wasn't guitar/drums type thing smile.gif we also had an organ as well.

Yes, I used to play keyboard (full band actually, with the drummer) in the church and my favorites has always been that of Hillsongs Music.

I've since heard something about it being easier for guitarists? (The whole being in G/Em thing)

Ooooh I like that one, yet to play it though.

I must say, I'm not at all religous, yet the congregation, vicar and band are happy for me to play with them (probably only because I'm doing it as a favour) and I quite enjoy it.

Isn't it in Ab? Forgive me if I'm wrong though because I haven't heard/sung/played it for years... that's just the key it comes into my head in, and more often than not that turns out to be right... unsure.gif

A in mission Praise.

i've always known it in A major

Hmm... I'm probably a semitone out then.

Yes I 've played piano and a bit of flute in church for many years. I love playing the piano but I don't really follow the music, I just follow the chords and make up my own thing. I enjoy being part of a group too.

Shine Jesus Shine is in A major in every book I've seen, but I've transposed it into Ab so that the elementary sax and trumpets in our church can join in! The guitarists aren't too keen though, their optimum key seems to be E.
