I found a fantastic shop for new sheet music whilst I was on holiday - it was only small but they crammed masses of music into it, and also a really good range of musical gifts and accessories. I can thoroughly recommend it if you're in the area - it's a bit out of town but well worth going to - Gillian Greig Music just outside Taunton.

Has anyone else got any music shops they'd like to recommend people to visit if they're in the area???

(NB. If you have any recommendations for shops selling *second-hand* sheet music, there's a separate thread called Great Little Shops for Second-hand Sheet Music smile.gif )

I always go to Chappells for my sheet music smile.gif Or if it's flute music, there's All Flutes Plus and Just Flutes quite near me.

I always go to Music Room (formerly Percy Priors) in Salisbury, which is good for sheet music and beginner instruments. The name may have changed but the staff are still as knowledgable and helpful as ever and it's easy and quick to order any music they don't have in smile.gif

Unfortunately they don't sell online at the moment, although they will sell by post.

Gillian Greig is my second favourite music shop - 2nd only because of distance. It takes me half an hour to get there, and 15 mins to get to my favourite one. If you want to buy from them you can fill in the query form on their website; they ring you within a couple of hours with an answer and you can then order over the phone. They're quick and efficient, and I always love a trip to the shop. Highly recommended. smile.gif

My favourite has less stock than Gillian Greig, but still has more than enough to choose from - it's the Clevedon Music shop. I've shopped with them for years, and they've always treated me well. Half the shop is given over to selling guitars, amplifiers etc so there's something for everyone.

Sanders recorder shop is in Bristol, skylark. However, I think he is giving up the presence on the high street and will be runing the business from home. If you check out the website, it says there what his plans are.

The web site says they're finishing on the high street at the end of September so I've left them off the list, thanks for the info.

I'm not sure which town All Flutes Plus and Allegro Music (Herefordshire) are based in - can anyone confirm please?

Thanks for the additons, and if anyone wants to correct any of the info in my first post, please feel free to let me know wink.gif

If anyone from MIR is reading this, WHyyyyy did you ahev e go and close your Worcester shop???????????? sad.gif

That place was excellent. They even had a springer spaniel to play with while you were waiting to be served. They still have a Stourbridge shop, which I would imagine is excellent

LOL, remember when we got lost trying to find it and had to peg it across Taunton for the train? That was quite funny...

Also Duck Son and Pinker in Bath, which is linked to Milsom & Son's, on Milsom Street / High Street, Bath.

It's WELL cool.

Mann's Music in Colchester

Helpful, cheerful and quick - I only know them from ordering by telephone for music to be sent to France but their service has always been very good.

Their telephone/postal service is fantastic. The stuff usually arrives next day... and the people there are incredibly helpful.

Brian Jordan Music, Green Street, Cambridge.

They look a Proper Serious Music Shop from the outside so it took me several visits to Cambridge to get the courage to go in. But in fact it turned out to be lovely - an upstairs full of secondhand music, a downstairs which had eight shelves of recorder music (I was a happy bunny), and a great big noticeboard for adverts for teachers, instruments, etc. They have a website and they supply summer school music postage free which is nice.

And, when I was there, service from a person who my husband said was remarkably close to being Bernard Black from Black Books, if only he'd had the accent biggrin.gif

I will add another vote for Brian Jordan. I think I know who you mean by the Bernard Black lookalike, it hadn't occured to me but I can see what you mean. In his defence when I asked him for Presto for Cello and Piano by Janacek (a request which had defeated all the other music shops in Cambridge) it took him about 5 seconds to pull out a book with it in so I think he's pretty knowledgeable (or just a cellist perhaps).

Millers is mentioned in the summary list at the top of the thread but, to me, they are just a very ordinary music shop. I may be underestimating them though.

One of our favourite shops is Johnny Roadhouse on Oxford Road in Manchester. Hobgobblin is upstairs there too. Boothes of Bolton is quite good, not got masses of Music, the staff are helpful though.

Nearly forgot aboput the Drum Centre in Eccles for all the Percussionists. The girls won't take me there because last time I banged the Gong laugh.gif . blush.gif Didn't realise how loud it would be blush.gif blush.gif

I quite like Music House - space-wise it's smaller than Scheerers but it seems less cramped and the music is laid out better so I find it a pleasanter browsing experience.

I only discovered ABC when I was doing this thread so I haven't been to it yet. Will try and get there some time but my next trip will be to Banks in York - you really can't beat it !

I must admit we're a bit spoilt with having Banks more or less on the doorstep blush.gif Some time I'd like to go to some of the London shops which people have mentioned, and it would be great if I could organise things so that I can call in to Cambridge to go to Brian Jordans when I pass on the way to or from Woodford Green - I've heard so much about BJ and the video is just superb biggrin.gif I'll try and find it from another thread and do a link....

Edit:

This is a link to one of the threads about Brian Jordan's shop, and this is a link to the other thread which has a link to THIS VIDEO about Brian Jordans biggrin.gif Love it!

Ah yes. Until recently, the only music shops I had ever used were the two in Inverness, which I thought were fabulous. When I was on holiday I ended up in Chapells in London - a slight case of the 'child in a sweet shop' syndrome kicked in! ph34r.gif biggrin.gif

For those in North Kent/South London, I can highly recommend "The Bookshop" in New Ash Green, Longfield (01474 874194). They have a good new book/CD supply, and some second hand bits and pieces as well.

What I'm most impressed with is their ordering service. I ordered a load of books last Saturday, and I had a call on Wednesday to say they were in! Whereas, about three months ago I ordered a supply from a shop in Bluewater, and they haven't ever rung to say they have the books . mad.gif

sad.gif It's probably great if you're a drummer - they had quite a lot of drum kits on display, and a few guitars but no other instruments that I could see. They had a half decent selection of new sheet music (nothing like Scheerers) but they didn't have the new AB woodwind syllabus and didn't know it had changed. They had a bit of secondhand sheet music (quite a few pieces of oboe music, pianoboe) but it seemed to be quite pricey for secondhand music. It's not far out of town and there's easy parking, but I don't think I'll bother with it again.

I've just realised how organised Britten's of London are, for buying AB exam music. NB: I have no ulterior motive for saying this, other than being impressed!

The prices look quite good aswell.

Remove balaams, after i said it!

I prefer millers of cambridge... balaams prices are extortinate!

I also like Gillian Grieg's shop in Taunton, having used it quite a bit recently for mail-order items. However, another shop which I have found very efficient for mail order is Windows Music Shop, Central Arcade, Newcastle. They used to send out the music with an invoice instead of asking for payment 'up-front'. (not sure if they still do this!)
skylark
I'll remove Brittens on Wigmore Street from the list in my first post, and is it Freeman & Neale in Rugby that's closed as well - could somebody confirm please....? Any others to be removed or added to the list?

On the plus side, Music House in Harrogate has increased the size of their sheet music department. It now takes up all the basement floor - it's still not as big as Banks in York but it's pretty good.

Does anyone know if Music Notes in Liverpool is worth a trip? I pass close by sometimes and the web site makes it sound worth visiting - is it worth making a slight detour?

Incidentally Music Notes in Liverpool keeps a Teachers Register and they pass contacts on to pupils who are looking for a teacher in the area.

Sheehan's in Leicester (just moved to big new premises, now stock pianos!) Friendly people, utterly unpretentious - and owner Noel Sheehan is a nice guy

And of course the mighty Banks of York... not remotely as eccentric as it was in the 1970s...but nowhere is!

Just because two shops are part of the same chain doesn't make them equally useful. I don't find Barbican Chimes particularly useful because it's small and badly laid out. That presumably isn't true of Kensington Chimes, which someone has recommended.

If people post the name of the shop and its location, I will do my best to keep the list updated as other members might find it useful.
