I just bought today the new grade 3 syllabus (violin and piano score with CD).
I am just sitting here listening to the CD...
I know a lot of music but often don't know its title or who it was composed by...
well, I have already come across one that I ABSOLUTELY LOVE (only by looking at title I did not recognise it) and now feel COMPELLED to buy the book to learn it!
I am now 'scared' that I will find others I love as my purse is often 'deflated' lately laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif and buying lots of different books although good for your learning can be a little hard on the cash blush.gif
Anyway, the one I love and am off to musicroom to buy is: A6 Pachelbel, Canon. (from book 'The classic experience').

I'm sure this is something you could download free from somewhere. You might not want to use a download for an exam as there must be 1001 versions but just to have a go playing it and save some money.

Yes, this is a very famous piece and has lots of free versions on the net. I downloaded one for free the other day arranged for the piano.

I know what you mean, Jo. I didn't like any of the pieces from Part A of the syllabus, but really liked the sound of the Hotteterre Gavotte, from the alternatives. I had to spend £10.99 on Sheila Nelson's Baroque Violinist to get this, but it was worth it. This looks like a nice collection, and the Gavotte is a joy to play, especially if you like plenty of ornamentation - this piece is littered with trills and mordents. Unfortunately, I failed to notice the solitary lower mordent, which I've been practising as an upper. Oh dear...

I also didn't 'really' take onto any of the pieces in list A (the german dance was the only one I 'could envisage playing'). But now have found Canon and although I could get it for free from the net, I 'might' buy the book (The Classic Experience) as just like the one you bought it has many others which will be nice to play.
But now that you have noticed you have been playing an upper rather than a lower mordent you can put it right (better than finding out on day of exam! ohmy.gif that's if you're taking any).

That book is a good collection, I bought it a while ago, can't actually remember which piece it was I did and for what grade though ph34r.gif But anyway, I'm grade 7/8 standard now and I still find it useful, even just for sightreading, there's some lovely pieces in there smile.gif

which one did you mean DevilFiddler? the baroque collection or the classical one?
thanks
Jo
Devil_Fiddler
The Baroque one. I also have the Classical one, but personally I haven't played from it as much, but then I do prefer baroque to classical smile.gif
The Boyz Mum
I have the same problem with my son who hated all the Section A pieces in the ABRSM book but loves the Gavotte and the Pachelbel - so off we go to try and get them!

Ouch

AHAAAAAAAAAHHH!

I have just sat and listened to the very same CD for the new grade 3 pieces and they're really great but I LOVE the Pachabel.

I'm playing the full-size Pachabel in a quartet just now but I'll just have to get the music and use if for my Grade 3 in March (seems ages away).
LooneyTunes
I prefer the pieces from the current grade 3 syllabus! ph34r.gif
