To go back to the original topic

I think most males get into singing once they're at uni/college and there's a decent choir that they can join.

are you saying that choirs in schools (not uni or colleges) are not decent....

well actually i think in fairness most of them aren't.
how many schools can you name with a decent choir? I've gathered pretty much that your school choir is rather good.
my school choir is terrible.
my brother's school choir is fantastic.
most of the other schools in my area don't even HAVE choirs.
uni choirs are generally more amazing that school choirs. GENERALLY. Not always.

I'm at an all-girls state grammar school. My brother goes to an all-boys state grammar school that used to be independent but changed in the Victorian era (I think).
Much of the UK's under-16 population are at state comprehensives with little or no music department.
At my school we make the best of what we've got but that doesn't necessarily make it top quality. The main thing about our choir is that we enjoy it. We have the discipline but not the talent, or the money to develop the talent.
At university there definitely IS the talent, and the inspiration. Therefore I think uni choirs are generally better than school choirs.

also i think at secondary school you're not going to get younger boys who still have treble voices, and by the time guys have got used to their adult voices, singing is since as not so cool.
saying that, i'm only talking about my bog standard local comprehensive.
altho our senior choir has about 20 people in, and about 5 men/boys, including two male teachers. bless them, they try so hard, and we have a laugh with it.
which is what music's all about really. enjoying yourself, and making music with others.

Yeah, same with us. We have more than twenty people, I think, but about 5/6 men, most of which are teachers. Every single practice, we have to run over the tenor and bass parts and they still get them wrong! It is quite amusing, especially as they sing quite loud. Except now our conductor's decided he's gonna have to sing with them at a carol concert, because they're really not getting the parts!

NO WAY!!
who say men don't sing!!
In my school, there's a huge young men's Chorus and barbershop.
Hehe i m the most-in-tune Baritone in the group!!
(PS. our barbershop quartet"blue tak" just won the 1st in NZ and our chorus just won the 3rd!!)
Singing in NZ is a wonderful thing!!

SATB choirs are soooooooo much fun... I sang with one for the first time last Saturday (I had to sing alto because there would have only been 3 altos if I hadn't, and there were 2 seperate alto parts!!)... I just wish I had the time to join one on a regular basis!!!! I have been asked back to sing with that one though (it's at my music centre, but I can't go because I can't get there on Saturdays!)...
It's funny actually... in that particular choir, all the sopranos have really big egos and won't sing unless they're pleaded with (they all think they're far too good to sing with the likes of us... you know how it is, I'm sure...). All the altos are friendly but quiet... but it's the tenors and (especially!) the basses that are the real enthusiasts!!! (and me, of course...) They wanted to arrange all sorts of things like carol singing and mini concerts (so far I'm the only girl that wants to do it... anyone spotting a pattern here?!)... they're all in a barbershop group as well... So in this particular choir, it's the males that are really the ones that want to sing!!!
So, keen male singers do exist!!

I'm sure Pavarotti would love to hear you say that...
Most males refuse to sing not because they can't, but because they don't realise they can.

I love singing in SATB choirs. I go on a choir camp every year, and they get loads of other people who sing in church choirs and an excellent conductor an organist (we are having someone from Westminster Abbey this year!) and we reherse together for week and then do a service in Carlisle Cathedral! Its great! They do seem to get the same number of males as females as well!

I sing with an SATB choir fairly regularly and really enjoy it. And yes, we have a fair number of males.

I suppose that's part of it, in my case. I used to love singing Renaissance music (madrigals etc.), one to a part, but my voice and singing technique are not good enough for me to be welcome in a group that works to a high standard like that. The rehearsals of most amateur choirs include quite a lot of time correcting mistakes of reading and tuning. Instrumental chamber music gets to the interpretative problems much quicker, hence the pejorative and totally unfair invention, by instrumentalists, of the two disjoint categories: musicians and singers.

No-one seems to have come up with my husband's excuse for not joining a choir - he says he is a baritone, so he can't sing either tenor or bass, also that he can't read music as it's too difficult! He has a very good voice (lots of training with Scout camp fires!) and several people have asked if he sings in a choir - I wish I could peruade him as the choirs round here desperately need men and I'm sure he would enjoy it if he went along and persevered.
