Hi
When I listen to a piece of music I can tell when it changes key but I have trouble trying to figure out what key it is.I have been told you need to recognise modulations for the higher exam grades so I need help!!!
Any tips would be gr8 help!!!

Do u know about relative major and minors? Most modulations in music switch to their relative minor or major dont they?

I'm doing this at the moment for Grade 8 Aural - it's not too hard once you learn what to look out for.
Relative minor/major should be pretty easy to recognise im sure! for modulations to the subdominant, listen out for the tonic turned into a dominant 7th, providing the link to the new key. for modulations to the dominant, try to hear the music 'rising' (as the subdominant note becomes sharpened).

In the advanced exams it helps if you fix in your mind the primary key and tonic note, e.g C maj and C, then listen for the modulation. What key does the music finish in? Is it still the same as the note you have in your head? If its not then does it sound higher or lower. If its lower then the key has likely changed to the subdominant if its higher then its very likely modulated to the dominant. Little skills like this will assist you in developing an analytical ear. Good luck!
