Ok, I have broken my own rule about refusing to teach this piece and I currently have an adult student doing it, I noticed a wrong/different note to how I have played it for the last too many years and picked it up. She was correct for the edition she had - which wasn't a particularly good one. So I corrected it in her copy. Now I checked with my editions later I have 4, and 2 say one thing and 2 say the other so I was wondering how everyone else plays it?

The note in question is Bar 7, 22 and every other time this bit comes(the last one before the 1st/2nd time bars ) wacko.gif the 2nd RH note - do you play a D or an E? So in the terms of the cadence V7 or a plain V.

I have also deliberately avoided ever aquiring a recording of this, so would be interested to know if anyone has one what they play.

Thank you

E in every one but for the ending, which is played with a D. I think that's the one you mean? smile.gif

You're not counting the upbeat, right, and you mean bar 15, not 22? huh.gif

My copy has E's all the way through, and I have played E's for 52 years or so since I learned it

Even in the penultimate bar?

apparently either is correct... play what is written, or what you prefer.

Sorry, this is a bit off topic, but I was interested to read this post as when I started piano lessons after a 25 year gap, the first thing my teacher asked me was what sort of thing did I like and who were my favourite composers and so on. I said I'd be happy to learn anything she suggested, but could I please be spared Fur Elise as when I was at school whatever time of the night or day, someone, somewhere, was playing it, and usually badly, and it's put me off for ever. She said her husband pleaded with her not to teach it, but if the student insisted then could there only be one at a time learning it!

Are you bored of it too, or is it just too painful hearing it mangled by your students!

Yes to all of the above biggrin.gif

I actually took the bar numbers from a Trinity publication, (one of my 'D' copies smile.gif ) We can't even get that the same laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

My original copy that I learnt from 30 odd years ago had E's all the way through, yes even the penultimate bar, it seems to be the more modern ones that have the D.

Bizzare to stumble across this thread when I recently started Fur Elise of my own volition a few weeks ago. I've just taken over my daughter's piano lesson and played last night for the 1st time (I shadowed her G1-G5 over the last 3yrs without any lessons myself). I didn't know what material to tackle next as I wasn't tutored myself at the time so picked up Fur Elise and began it solo.

My edition is written with a D on the last refrain which felt awful as I played and I couldn't stop myself continually playing an E instead which sounded so much better I felt (untrained ears I know). I asked the teacher in my 1st lesson last night about it, and he said play the E rather than the printed D.

I think Fur Elise is a wonderful little piece. When played well (of course) there's a wonderful icy coldness about it, particularly in the B and C sections. Pure heartbreak.

My copy has an E.
