How long does it take for you to learn a piece of music?

I'm a really disastrous sight reader, so I can take about 5 to 6 weeks (or even longer!) to learn a long piece (10+ pages), and up to 2 weeks for shorter pieces (less than 4 pages). I can normally play it correctly after the 1st or 2nd week but then my teacher and I have to spend time perfecting it. I'm wondering whether 6 weeks is too long to learn 1 piece of music.

What do you think?

Very difficult to say, 'cos it depends on the piece, how long you practise each day and the standard you're at! I always think that it's ironic that the better you get at playing, the longer it takes to learn a piece because the pieces are harder and harder!!

When I was studying for my recital at uni, some of the pieces I had been learning for up to 12 months. But now as I don't have the time to practise as much I tend to choose 'easier' pieces that 'only' take about 2 to 3 months to get under my fingers.

So I think the answer is, it takes as long as it takes for you to be able to play your pieces with confidence! Helpful, huh? rolleyes.gif

This is quite a hard one. I think it must be a lot different for different people. As for me, it generally takes me about a month to get a piece so i basically know it, but i wouldn't want to go anywhere near a performance or exam for quite a bit longer than that (I generally spend 2 terms learning the pieces for exams). But then, some people can perfect pieces in a week or so, so i must be on the 'slow' side.

It takes me up to a year to perfect a piece... quite depressing, but if I just want to be able to play it, like if I'm accompanying someone, I usually only take a few days smile.gif

But then don't you get bored for playing the same piece for months (or sometimes, a year)?
I did that when I was doing piano exams, and played the same couple of pieces for 6 months. The pieces did get perfected (and I mean perfected) by the end of the 6 months but it made me feel that I'm not playing a wide enough repertoire.

I agree it takes ages, so far several weeks on 6 bars of a Debussy prelude (am playing other things of course,
not just these 6 bars!!)

I remember reading on the CD cover of a Anne Sophie Mutter Beethoven concerto (she was a violin child prodigy) that when she first played it for Karajan, he said, "work on it for another year and then we'll see about performing it". This gives me encouragement in a weird kind of way.
