This reminds me of a mathematical joke.
"Either you believe in the law of the excluded middle, or you don't".

It was the email signature of a logician (a colleague) and it took me ages to get it.

Here's another:
"There are 3 kinds of mathematician. Those who can count and those who can't."

Also:

"There are 10 kinds of people in the world: those that read binary and those that don't."
(In binary code 10 = #2)

All I'm saying is that I believe that the individual is more important than what one assumes to be characteristics of either adult or young students.

Has anyone said the individual is not important or that general characteristics are more important than individuals? If they did, I missed it!

Being an adult is one of the very characteristics that makes me the individual learner that I am.

I would be ecstatic to get a gold star if my teacher gave them out ........

I give out gold stars (and other stickers) to adults as well as children (ask barry-clari and katyjay - or look at barry's profile pic!).

Depends on the stage of learning. I'm not sure I want my copy of WTC covered in gold stars, but if I was learning an instrument right from the beginning, it'd probably be different. My adult students are delighted if they get smiley faces drawn in their tutor books.

Anyone notice how tutor books are either dull as ditchwater or assume that the learner is about seven years old?

When Cyrilla gives me a gold star I don't put it on my music, I stick them on my notes. The advantage of that is that I know exactly when I was good.

laugh.gif Aw - Robodoc is a specialist, and I'm a generalist, though an individualistic one* - are you a general specialist, or a specialist specialist, Robodoc?

*mainly because it helps me to feel important wink.gif

I do umbilical hernia repairs (sometimes), but I'm not a naval surgeon!

To a large extent, I agree Deborah. I tend to use 'Team Woodwind' as a tutor book more often than any other, but even that has its flaws. I think there's a gap in the market here that needs to be filled...
