Hi All,

I am playing grade 3 Hornpipe by Purcell, adding in the ornamentation for example bar two as a turn. What does the editors addition of the 5 \ 3// mean?

Many thanks

I am also learning pieces from ABRSM grade 3 syllabus, needless to say I have skipped the Hornpipe for that reason, I don't know how to interpret or play the ornaments and I haven't asked my teacher yet as she was preparing me for grade 2. BUT I will see her on monday, and now I have decided NOT to enter for grade 2 as I am on the waiting list for an operation and they told me they will call me anytime from now til december and I will need 6 weeks to recover fully from it. So I am going for grade 3 in march 08.
I'll ask about the ornaments to my teacher on monday, but I hope someone here can shed some light before then smile.gif

I don't have the mysic here as the book is on loan to one of my students at the moment.
It's just dawned on me what this MIGHT be.
Is it written above or below one note?
It sounds like a fingering suggestion to me.... if I'm right you play the note with finger 5 then swap to 3 without releasing it to give you a change of hand position for the next note(s).

Yes Sbhoa, it is written above the note 5 with a / below it then next to the 5/ is a 3// (both of these above note).
I have not started learning the piece yet, but this note also has a trill above it apart from the 5/3//, so sounds like you might be right!

I think (working from memory) the ornament is in fact written out above the music, and that the numbers are an indication of fingering.

Jo sorry to hear this - will pm you.

I think there was a thread a while ago (possibly re the new syllabus = 07-08 when it first came out) where a few of us were in agreement that this piece was pushing it for the grade. So don't be put off if you find it tricky - it may well be worth the effort but is definitely not an easy option.

I actually thought this piece was easier than ice cream van with 7/8 parts and bobby bonny blue toe which is really jazz (or something?) - its one thing thats made me see the reasons for a seperation in teaching Jazz and normal 'piano'
