Hi

newHere.gif

Just thought I would say hello to everyone, I've been around for a while but haven't posted here yet... smile.gif

I have recently taken up piano again after a break of about 10 years and am working (slowly!) towards my G7 (did G1-6 and G5 theory a long time ago...). Am enjoying it so far but perhaps that will change come exam time!! laugh.gif

I also found my treble recorder which I haven't played since I was in primary school!! Anyone have any advice on starting the recorder nearly from scratch?? I thought it would be fun to give it a go....

Hi Lucyb and welcome!

Take a bit of time to read the boards here. You'll find that pianoing tips are on the Piano board, and recorder is one of the hot topics in Woodwind.

Good luck with your music

Cheers

Welcome to the forum Lucy.

In Viva Woodwind you'll find lots of info about the recorder - there are a lot of recorder players on the forum, with lots of good advice. I've ended up playing recorders an awful lot since joining the forum, and have thoroughly enjoyed playing them. smile.gif

Hi lucyb and welcome

A ten year break you're restarting piano at grade 7! Wow!
If I get a two week break it feels like back to square one wacko.gif

Hope you enjoy the forums.

Hi lucyb, welcome to the forums and glad you've started posting smile.gif

About the recorder, I would recommend that you try and have a few lessons with a recorder teacher. The reason I say this is because like you I hadn't played the recorder since primary school but started trying to teach myself as an adult some years ago. I thought I was doing really well until I got together with one of my friends who'd got something like G5 on the recorder, and I realised that all the time I spent trying to teach myself had been largely wasted because I'd been doing so much of it wrong. I didn't touch my recorder again for about two years after the session with my friend because I was so disheartened. It might be better for you because you're a pianist so at least you'll understand about rhythm etc (which I didn't), but all the same, if you can have some lessons to set you off on the right track, I'm sure you'll find it useful. If you do, try to make sure that you get a recorder specialist rather than a teacher who just tacks recorder on to other instruments. I'm not sure how you check this though - possibly get in touch with the Society for Recorder Players and see if they know a teacher in your area??? There's lots of adult recorder players on the forum and having listened to several recorder ensembles at forum concerts, I think they sound really good even though I don't play myself now smile.gif

Have fun around the forums and hope you find them useful!

Hi Piano63 & everyone,

Thanks for the welcomes!

Yes I started playing when I was about 6 and kept it up until I started university (had got as far as G6), but there was just too much going on then so I stopped my lessons, then my parents moved house and sold the piano!!! ohmy.gif

Last year I finally moved into a house big enough to have a piano and I bought myself one at xmas last year, I was playing a bit by myself between then and now but I only started back into my lessons at the start of this month as I had to wait for the school term! I am back with my old teacher which is really nice and I think now that I'm a bit older I am much more inclined to practise!! Mind you, not having any homework to do helps too... wink.gif

Thanks for the recorder info everyone, I will have a look on the woodwind forum....
Skylark I had a look on the recorder society website, they don't seem to have any regional groups near me (I'm in Belfast) although there is one in Dublin so maybe I'll get down to them some day. Recorder teachers seem few and far between!!
