There's more to a college than its reputation - though that is important. And there will be past students who will be biased towards 'their' college, naturally.
When I was looking to do my first degree I applied to go to (among others) Oxford and Bangor (North Wales). In the end I found Oxford a but opressive, and wanted to go climbling and sailing as well as study. So I chose Bangor. A few years later I had the opportunity to go to Oxford for my Masters, and thoroughly enjoyed it.
In short, you can't chose a college on reputation, other people's opinions, location etc alone. Visit a few colleges - you'll probably find one that 'feels right' for you. That's important. It'll be hard work, but you must enjoy it too...
Good luck with your hunting, and let us know how you get on.
