I have been preparing students for their GCSE performance exams for some time. Heads of music departments have instructed me that the pupils need to choose music for their solo and ensemble which is representative of the following categories - arrangement, irish traditional or celebratory. To date I have based both performances on choices from said areas. One of my private pupils has come to me, having chosen music for GCSE and has said that according to her school teacher only one performance (the solo or the emsemble) has to comply, the other can be completely free choice. I have tried to find a syllabus online but no joy.

Can anyone confirm exactly what the requirements are?

Thank you.

I can't really help here but doesn't it depend on which board? The pupils I have are reparing for one solo and one ensemble; and free choice.... I think they are Edexcel and OCR boards, but I may be wrong.

The candidate must do 2 compositions and 2 performing pieces (1 solo and 1 ensemble) They can either do 2 compositions related to 2 separate areas of study. In this case 1 of the performing items must be related to 1 of the areas of study used in composition and the other can be the candidates own choice. for example composition 1 is Celebratory, comp 2 is Musical Traditions in Ireland. Solo performance is Danny Boy so is same area of study as irish composition. Ensemble piece is therefore own chopice. Alternativly 1 of the compositions could be related to 1 of the area's of study and the other 1 free. In this case 1 of the performing pieces must be related to that area of study. The other performing piece is then related to 1 of the remaining area's of study. Sorry its so complicated.

Basically you are allowed 1 free choice. a composition and performance that relates to the same area of study and 1 further composition/performance that realates to another area of study.

For my GCSE I did an irish composition an irish solo piano piece. An ensemble that was related to Musical Arrangements and a free composition
