Why the Chief Examiner not answer questions ? wacko.gif

I've no idea - maybe he's busy!

At the risk of getting my wrists slapped, I think it'd be nice to know when/if the Chief Examiner will appear here... smile.gif

Has the new CE answered any questions on the forum? (Sorry - I'm too lazy to go back and check. blush.gif )

I'd also like to ask if there is any chance of the scale requirements being reduced for piano exams. The list for grade 5 and above is so unnecessarily long and students are opting to do TG exams because they want to play pieces on the piano rather than endless lists of scales.
niceThread.gif

I would like to second this. At Grade 6 there are over 100 scales and arpeggios that the candidate needs to be thoroughly familiar with. In theory as they proceed up the grades they will be learning them gradually, but in practice they still need to revise everything they've done for all other grades, as well as learning some new ones. No one will deny that learning scales is an essential skill, facilitating dexterous fingers for playing pieces, but over 100 when the examiner can only hear very few of these in the exam?

Brass exams also have extensive lists of scales which take great time to learn, both in the lesson and at home.
Would it be possible to have a reduction in standard of 1 grade for each scale list ie Grade 4 scales done at Grade 5 etc. Some of the keys used also needs looking at. Grade 3 Tuba has F sharp major. A nightmare for Flat loving tuba players!

These are not questions for the Chief Examiner, but for Site Admin, placed here after a long and fruitless search for a superior alternative.

1) Is there a better place for a question to Site Admin?

2) I note that a pound sign displays correctly on "preview Post" but "Add Reply" displays a question mark instead. Is it possible to correct this? If the software is well designed, all that will be required is a change to a table entry.

Grade 3 Tuba has F sharp major.

You know why this is? Because the list of tuba scales are the ones with the same fingerings as the equivalent trumpet/Eb Bass grade, and pays absolutely no regard to the difficulty of the key signatures. Typical un-joined-up AB thinking, I'm afraid.

EdGJ wrote a suggestion of an update on terms of reference "shortly"; "shortly" could mean longer than two days, and we are still waiting for the response that he forecast for "next Thursday" which was 22 October 2009.
Mancklin
Not sure if I am in the right place for this question but here goes anyway: what would be considered a normal time between notification of the date of an exam, and the exam itself? I was recently given 8 days notice for a Dip. ABRSM, which seemed a bit short.
Thanks.

I don't know why they don't delete this thread if it's never going to be read by or responded to by the Chief Examiner. Pointless. Actually, worse than pointless.

There was this neglected old thread,
Which the AB would not put to bed.
EdGJ never wrote -
Not a whisper, nor quote,
It's about time we declared this thread dead.

There's a terrible echo in here,
As there's no-one else lurking I fear.
It seems I can write,
A new ode every night,
And still EdGJ won't appear.
briantrumpet
Now, what shall I write here tonight?
A question about this website?
But will anyone read
What I write, or take heed?
Will the Chief Examiner bite?

Ah, a friend in this echoey place,
Hello Halka! I can't see your face.
Someone's switched out the light,
So you gave me a fright.
But let's sing now - you tenor, me bass.

Surprised to find others are near?
You two aren't the only ones here!
We've now got a trio -
So now one- two - three, oh,
I don't know - let's just have a beer.

Should they get different fingerings via different scales, depending on which clef their pieces are in? What if they use a mix of clefs in their pieces?

The tuba's a very strange beast,
Bass clef tuba, the flats worry least.
Eb Major's a doddle
Sharp keys just seem like twaddle,
Flats are lovely, but sharps are off-piste.

Treble clef tuba's not quite the same,
It transposes - 'Eb Bass' now the name.
So they get used to sharps
As they make all their parps.
Hope you've got that. (Though my rhymes are lame.)

You want me to sing? That's not on!
Perhaps - when you others have gone.
But I'm not a tenor
That's a voice for the men - or
For me once the beer's drunk anon.

Groan. Night night!

So we are into another new year
And nought from EdGJ we hear
So instead a new rhyme,
As I seem to have time
To write poems, eat cake, and drink beer.
SG violin & flute
Hi, I was hoping you'd be able to answer my questions:

I am taking my Grade 6 Flute exam in a few weeks.
I wanted to know:
- When doing the scales, is it in even notes (not long tonic)?
- When you do slurred scales, when do you need to tongue - eg is it the first note of each octave, or not at all?

My flute teacher wasn't very sure when I asked her, cos she specialises in sax.

Many Thanks!

Hello Chief Examiner

In case you have not seen my pleas for help ....

Can you please tell me what a "R" Theory paper is? I see the normal A,B,C and S designations in the past papers.

The reason I ask is that I need to track down a copy of the 2002 Grade 5 Theory "R" paper. It is essential that it is this exact paper because this is the one for which the RNIB holds a BRAILLE copy which was used for an examination.

My daughter is teaching a blind student and will be wanting to enter her for her grade 5 theory (has grade 5 flute, and wants to progress). However, she, as the sighted teacher, needs a "normal" copy from which to teach, given that the student will have her music parts converted to "braille music", which is a different representation to the staves we all know and love! So, it is vital to know how the transcription process worked as well as having a copy from which to work.

We have managed to get a copy of the 2003 "C" paper, for which there is also a braille version, so we at least have one copy to work from.

So, it would be good to know where to start looking for this "R" paper, and any help would be gratefuly received. Better still, a copy of the paper (slim chance I know).

Regards

Dr Rob Fletcher

Hi DrBob

The current Chief Examiner doesn't seem to look at this thread so I very much doubt you will get a response here. The most likely place for someone to know would have been the Theory Forum, if it hasn't been answered there it is unlikely that anyone else knows anything better. Have you tried emailing or ringing the board directly? I've always found them very helpful and they maybe able to point you in the right direction.

Good luck in your search.
