I think it's Terry Pratchett who writes that there should be a word for words that sound like something would sound like if it made a sound, even though it doesn't wacko.gif

i.e. words like glint, glisten - which sound like, if "glinting" made a sound, it would sound like glint!

At the bottom of the article it says that it has more Zs than any other known word in the english language. I wasn't aware that there were any unknown ones.

It wouldn't surprise me over much if there are some languages which have not been studied/written down, or possibly that have not even been deciphered or even encountered by "the world at large". So while all languages I guess will be known to somebody, there may be languages that are considered unknown in the same sense that the New World was once considered unknown even though the Native Americans knew it quite well.

But the English language?
sarah-flute
Sorry, misread your post wacko.gif

No idea - what does it mean by known? Does a word that someone made up that is used throughout their town but not yet in the OED count as "in the English language"?

I suppose it depends how you define the English language - if you say it is the language of the English people then it would be impossible to record all the words in use all over the country.
barry-clari
What I find interesting is you can have a group of words that end in the same letters, where those letters are pronounced differently:

eg. bough, cough, dough, tough, through...
YetAnotherPianist
Erudite; which some people no doubt think is a type of glue.
lottie
I like simple words at the moment like;

boat (just like it)
oil (as in paint)
Zinzin (french for crazy)
violin (of course biggrin.gif )

and 'solipsism' is growing on me laugh.gif

Hm like Maizies rather uncommon zwitterion, there are some nice words in the Chemical Industry in which I work.

I rather like Benzotriazole, chlorhexidine (maybe in your mouthwash), cocoamidopropylbetaine (probably in your shampoo), dimethylcocamineoxide (in your thickened bleach). All of these I supply !

They remind me of a lovely word I used to need to say regularly a few years ago but which I've now forgotten - it began with poly and contained acryloritrilebutadiene (I think!) and it was normally abbreviated to PXX but I've forgotten the initials as well I'm afraid biggrin.gif I don't suppose you know what I mean, do you F#???
