Full Version: What Age Did You Start Singing Lessons?

I am wondering how young is too young to start singing lessons, so I would be interested to know what age you all started and whether you feel it was too young or not.
(I don't know how to do a poll so if anyone wants to do this please do!)

I am now 17 years old. I started having singing lessons at the age of 11 and passed Grade 8 with distinction at the age of 15. However, my voice is still fairly immature (I think my range is OK though, I'm a soprano and I can span three octaves, from F below middle C to the stupidly high F that only a few composers deem possible!)... I think singing lessons for children aren't such a good idea unless they're only being taught songs... technique and so forth is best learnt when their voices are more mature and versatile. For me this was at 14, but I've still got a way to go before I can consider myself a singer! Maturity is everything in singing!

I believe that younger children can take singing lessons so long as the teacher understands their voices. The important thing is not to push or stretch the developing voice but its a good time to get the child to begin understanding the vocal process, posture, breathing, vowels etc. Often younger children havent gotten into bad singing habits like some teens (who often try to emulate their favourite singers without knowledge of the vocal functions).

I started when i was 15 about 3 months ago and i'm just starting my grade 6 now. I think having a mature body/voice helps a lot.

I started in my early 40s. I wish I'd discovered singing earlier.

it doesn't matter...as long as you have the passion for the instrument...

that's all right.... i started singing lessons because i have the passion to sing.... this applies to organ...but not too much on the piano....

I sang in the school choir from about age 11, took lessons for about a year (age 16 or so) and took grade 8 straight after about a year of lessons at the beginning of A-level year. Then nothing for about 10 years, then resumed lessons for the fun and discovered a whole new ball-game... the thing is, it depends on whether you also already play an instrument or not - as far as "musicality" goes, and all the theory and reading notes and stuff, it makes a huge difference (speaking from experience)

wow... after a year of work and you did your grade 8...i did mine after like 2 years....
