The Ebay item had gone to a previous address (don't know how/why as the other item I bought the same day came to the correct address) and I was able to retrieve it once the seller told me where it had gone.

My other post still hasn't come. mad.gif mad.gif Royal Mail being totally unhelpful and the shop says we need to wait until it is 3 weeks since it was posted and then they will resend and claim off Royal Mail - the only problem with that is that the main thing in the order is no longer available... sad.gif

If this place is supposed to be indistinguishable from mumsnet these days, why one earth did no-one tell me about the John Lewis Christmas Ad????? ohmy.gif (which has, according to the papers, been a hot topic over there for some time.)

Is there counselling available for aging Smiths fans like myself do you think?

That song was such a mantra for my teen years that I am desperately struggling to come to terms with it being prostituted as a vehicle for marketing middle class ephemera.

Wonder what Marr and Morrissey are going to do with the money?

If I phone the IT helpdesk at work, and get put on hold, the "hold music" is soundtracks to old company adverts. I cannot think how anyone might ever have thought this would be a good idea! blink.gif The worst thing is when they get stuck in your head.

It just gives me another reason to do anything to avoid phoning the IT service desk. Perhaps this is the intention. *suspicious*

It's very much like my place of work as well with their background music. Because of company initiatives, they are forced to play 'Feeling Hot Hot Hot' and 'I Just Came To Say Hello'...rolleyes.gif

Not only that, they play two different versions of the latter - the original by Martin Solveig and a version by The Baseballs...

Mind you, not long until they'll start blasting out all the Christmas songs instead...

It doesn't help that I'm a qualified business analyst, that I've been working in IT for over 26 years, and I work with and design big complex systems. So I don't react favourably when a numpty located in XXXXXXX (name of country obscured to protect the guilty)starts giving me penny lectures when I have an issue that needs looking at, or treats me as if I am a 2 year old.

Violin Hero, I used to have to deal with a "help" desk in Bangalore, which really was a waste of time, and has given me a rather cynical attitude towards IT Service Desks. I have to admit, the current company is much more helpful, but then, they are UK based. I've yet to find that I know more than the person on the other end of the phone, which is really nice! smile.gif

That said, some are way better than others. I've found that often if I can't get my problem fixed in a few minutes, getting off the line asap and trying again (hopefully getting a different person) is the most time effective solution.

But the adverts... I'd almost look forward to Christmas music rather than old adverts. I feel like they're trying to brainwash me! I guess it could be worse though, at least I'm not based at the UK HQ: I was at a 4 hour meeting there last week, and nearly got flattened by a cyclist whizzing around the open plan office on some promotional thing, whilst making my zombie-like way to the coffee machine at half time!

Sometimes my corporate existance is just surreal. blink.gif

Which is why I never phone our helpdesk...I always submit a request via email where I can write out in full what the problem is, what I've done so far, and with what results, so I don't have to go through the 'please restart your computer to see if that helps it' routine, when I've just told them I've tried it but they can't go off-script.

Our spell-checker at work in our old mail software always wanted to change helpdesk to helpless. We liked that (and also 'errorlog' [a part of a bit of software we used which listed errors] to 'errorless').

I actually chose my ISP based on the fact that they have smart people on the end of the phone so that if things go wrong I can ring them and they won't tell me to go away because I'm running Linux, and they can only help me if I'm running windows.

Not sure we had it in those days (brother is now 67). Mum and I used Signal and the men had Gibbs SR! biggrin.gif Signal used to be "the toothpaste with a mouthwash in the stripes"; of course, the stripes have now been given over to fluoride.
