I was taking to a friends nan once and she was telling me how when she took her grade 5 piano it was in the middle of WWII so the examiner turned round and says 'I'll give you you're results now because they could get bombed tomorrow and you'll never know!'

Haha!
I wish that was the case for me..

I've just been watching 'Shine'...

Geoffrey Rush doesn't have a hand double!! blink.gif

How is it possible to play extraordinarily difficult pieces, while smoking, talking and acting generally?!? wacko.gif

A well deserved Oscar performance.

I cant watch it now without seeing Captain Barbossa (Pirates of the Carribbean) and waiting for him to go "OH AAARRRR". laugh.gif My husband was quite into to it when I did just that and he looked at me in amazement as he hadnt clicked that it was the same actor. huh.gif

Oh that's a great film!

Thanks for reminding me about it - I would like to watch something tonight and had looked out 'The Red Violin' or 'A Beautiful Mind'.

Another really good film!! Did you watch it in the end?

Its stupid how the two films about people doing really well at the two things I 'do' (being maths and music) involve the people going mad...things aren't looking too good for me blink.gif

Does anyone beside me think that toilet paper is getting narrower ? Ok maybe the well known quality brands aren't, but particularly those large rolls you get in offices etc. At our office the stuff is down to 9.1mm, which is bordering on impracticality ! Anyone find any narrower than that ??

9.1 mm? Less than a centimetre for toilet paper? Methinks there's a typing error :-) Are you sure that's not just the ragged end bit?

Miss Ross and myself reacted to your investigation in a way that possibly isn't appropriate in a public library. Not round here, anyway.

I can't say the width of toilet paper had been something I'd considered up until now. I do fear for your measuring device! There are many comments I could make with regard to the matter, but they're possibly not of a calibre that is in keeping with the standards of this forum. Being in a public library and reacting the way we did is one thing, but to make ungraceful remarks apropos of the width of toilet roll is territory that I daren't infringe upon! wacko.gif

It sounded nothing like Miss Ross - I could tell it was you a mile off! tongue.gif biggrin.gif

Porridge is good for you - very wholesome! The Scots have it with Drambuie - well that's what a hotel told me once when they gave me porridge with Drambuie for breakfast and I saw no reason to argue, it was an unusual combination but I can thoroughly recommend it party1.gif (subject to parental consent and it being legal of course rolleyes.gif biggrin.gif)
fsharpminor
I loathe it but Mrs has it every day. (Porridge that is). Dont the Scots spell it Porage though ?? Thats waht it has on the Quaker Oats packet.

I haven't eaten porridge since the other morning! I guess I'll have to train myself...

My mum used to make us a bowl of Ready Brek before school on a winters morning! I have some occassionally but it resembles wall plaster more than porridge half the time. mellow.gif

My step-dad has the Quaker Oats made with water rather than milk ill.gif Apparently this is the "proper way" to have porridge/porage. Maybe one of our Scottish friends will tell us. smile.gif

In fact Mrs. has hers with a 50:50 mixture of water and semiskimmed milk. Her doctor recommended her to have porridge about a year ago , and she has hardly missed a day since. She puts a few blueberries in it though, also good for you.

You mean porridge can be made with milk?! ohmy.gif I've always had it made with water, both as a child, and at university. (Don't think I've had any since then, but my children both had it made with water as children.) Not my favourite breakfast, but it was certainly the "proper way" to have porridge in South Yorkshire in the '50s and '60s.

Actually, I seem to remember my mother telling me that Scots put salt on their porridge rather than syrup (or brown sugar) and milk as we did.
sarah123
Does it really matter how you make it and what you put on it - it tastes disgusting however its done tongue.gif

Traditionally, yes, porage has salt on it. But for me, I make it with milk (not water) but I don't add anything else. I can't imagine adding sweet stuff or sugar to it...

We should have had a porridge thread biggrin.gif

Organic oats from the health food shop taste nicer than Quaker Oats and make a softer texture if soaked in water overnight (just enough to soak up the water and soften them), then add some milk in the morning and heat in the microwave. Eat with brown sugar, a little more cold milk, cornflakes sprinkled on top wacko.gif, or with salt, or Drambuie....
petrat
You can add it to the recipe thread if you like. It is time that we got some more ideas going there.
