My step-dad has the Quaker Oats made with water rather than milk

Apparently this is the "proper way" to have porridge/porage. Maybe one of our Scottish friends will tell us.

You mean porridge can be made with milk?!

I've always had it made with water, both as a child, and at university. (Don't think I've had any since then, but my children both had it made with water as children.) Not my favourite breakfast, but it was certainly the "proper way" to have porridge in South Yorkshire in the '50s and '60s.
Actually, I seem to remember my mother telling me that Scots put salt on their porridge rather than syrup (or brown sugar) and milk as we did.
