I started at 9:45 this morning and have just got back. It was fairly easy, even though I dropped an ice cream sundae on the floor. Everyone was like "everyone's done it", except my brother, who said "I've never done that..."

Of course, apparently, he once threw away the day's takings, once broke the £300 coke machine, and once when a customer said: "Can I have an ice cream sundae?" responded: "You mean 'Can I have an ice cream sundae PLEASE!'"

He was in a bad mood apparently.

I'm glad everything went good at work. By the way, what hampened with the grumpy guy?

Having spent quite a lot on visiting our daughter in Moscow over the New Year, we are slumming it in BerkshireSon's student house in Durham - figured that as he and his friends are having to pay the rent on an empty house we might as well have the benefit! (We are actually going to pay the rent for them whilst we're staying there.)

Hoping to get to Alnwick Castle, Hadrian's Wall, Lindisfarne, Whitby, etc, etc.

Durham and the surrounding area is lovely!

Your holidays sound good to me, as a Durham alumna and someone who studied Russian and therefore did a year in Russia I have fond memories of both

The Durham Dales are worth a visit too, especially if you're prepared to do a bit of walking - you get a much better view of the beautiful countryside if you go away from the car for a bit. There's a really good bakers in Stanhope which does the best pies and sausage rolls I've ever had.

Sarah: for some bizzare reason everyone I know who's done Russian at Durham has been called Sarah (or Sara pronounced like Sarah) - I'm adding you to that list now.

Sarah, sorry to be nosey, but did you study Russian on it's own or combined with another subject, and did you do an A level in Russian before you went to university, or did you learn it from scratch? I ask because I'm considering studying French at university and would like to combine it with either Italian or Russian, but the Italian or Russian would be from scatch (French at post A level when I get there), and wondered how easy it is to study a language from scratch like that?

This morning I was packing up to leave for work, when I pushed an armchair aside and it sounded an even tone "doh...". I thought it sounded like a middle-C, and ran to my piano to confirm it. Yes it was middle-C! Then I thought of you all on this forum, and found time to post tonight! Miss you all!

Oh yeah. Been there, done that.... When I was in my first year I had a habit of waking up in friends's bed (they weren't in it) wondering how I'd got there. Especially during freshers week. There's this one night and all I can remember is a hedgehog

I got into a bit of trouble for that last year and was soooo glad to leave the country for 3 months shortly after! I think I would have died of embarrassment otherwise! As a general rule, I *never* use my phone when drunk now except to call a taxi. Learned my lesson there

Leeds city centre post office now has a ticketing system in place, much like a supermarket deli counter. Is this a common system in post offices?

I can think of at least one post office in London that does it too...

Work-local main post office has just had a refurb, and yes, they've put the ticketing system in during the refurbishment.

I wonder why taxis seem to congregate in the car park down there....

I've never seen this before, but if it tells you an estimated wiat then it might be good. Our post office just has a very long queue which sometimes goes all the way out the door. I had to queue for over half an hour yesterday to get the tax disc for my car.

My random comment is that I now seem to suddenly have 5 blue boxes under my name rather than 4. I take it that 2000 posts must have been one of the magic points where you suddenly change from one category to the next. It means that BB2 and I don't match anymore.

You've become a virtuoso - well done Flossie! When BB2 gets to 2,000, you'll match again, and she isn't far off 2,000.

The next and final step is 'Maestro', at 8,000.

I think 8,000 is quite a long ways off.

I am well gormless. Put a candle on the windowsill a few days ago. Glorious rays of sunlight shone towards it and warmed it up... it has changed shape somewhat and I've had to clean up. Worst of it is that it's a red candle and there looks to be blood everywhere. Beggar!

Cambridge and Ely are actually a very long way apart! I now know that it is much easier to get the train than walk the 15 miles between them. At least I'm going to sleep well tonight!

Seemed like a good idea. The original plan was to walk back too, but our legs were aching and Rosie (chocolate lab) had stopped jumping in the river so must have been tired too, so we got the train back.
