And so the killing begins sad.gif

My 12 year old sister came home to find feathers everywhere, then went upstairs and there was a ###### pigeon carcass in front of the airing cupboard (we think it was a pigeon, there wasn't much left though, only a foot and a bit of wing according to dad, but that's what the feathers looked like) and either a head or an organ on her floor. And blood all over the kitchen rug. Yummo.

Do I need to go out and get really drunk before I go to university? blink.gif My friends seem to think it's a rite of passage so to speak...but some of them regularly go out and get hammered. I've been "out" a few times, and to loads of house parties and things, but I've never been drunk - and nor does the idea appeal to me! Any thoughts?
Babybird2
I would advise NOT doing that. Plenty of time for that when you get to uni wink.gif

No you don't. Loads of people don't! It's harder to avoid when you're actually at uni, but still possible if you feel strongly about it. Don't stress too much about it, some people enjoy it and some people don't and there's nothing wrong with being in either category. smile.gif

You don't have to get drunk. I enjoyed (and still enjoy) a drink or two, or three (!), but have never been absolutely drunk out of my mind, and have never felt I've missed out on things because I've never got really drunk.

What exactly is the appeal of getting so drunk that you forget what happened during the evening and/or you're sick everywhere... blink.gif
DawnF
I've never gone out with the intention of getting drunk. I think that thought is awful ohmy.gif However, I have occasionally found myself rather drunker than I'd like blush.gif- usually through getting a bit carried away, larger glasses than I've realised, mixing drinks or drinking when underfed or too soon after being a bit under the weather.

All things I've learnt to try to avoid. It is all about learning your limits but being drunk is not a nice feeling. Quite the opposite in fact. ill.gif A couple of small drinks can create a quite nice relaxed feeling. Much more is not a good feeling.

Don't be pushed into anything by your friends. I'd say uni is more about developing maturity, independance and responsibility than getting drunk. Yes many students go too far. Do you want to be one of them? Answer that and you have your answer smile.gif

(I couldn't drink anything as I was taking antibiotics at the time) so I've decided that I can have a good time regardless smile.gif

We've always been fairly relaxed about wine at dinner, etc, but neither of our offspring drinks much at all. I suspect the main reason is expense - if you drink regularly at uni you will run up a lot of debt - or possibly us introducing it at too young an age, when their palates just didn't like it. According to my son (who's just going into his second year at Durham), students usually either hardly ever drink, or drink a lot. The latter never have enough cash for other things they want to do!

You'll find like-minded friends whether you go out drinking, or whether you don't. Just make sure that whatever you do is what you truly want to do, and that you don't just follow others in order to fit in, and end up wishing you hadn't. You can go out and drink whatever you like - lots of people have a J2O now, and no-one bats an eyelid, and you can always make sure one drink lasts a long time - so you don't have to feel you're missing out on the company, but neither need you get drunk if it doesn't appeal.

Hope you have a great time at uni! smile.gif

Site rules were issued, and seemed to be mainly directed at men:

When in discussion with a female colleague you should stand at least one meter (sic) away, and not touch her in any way or make gestures that could be misconstrued. Your tongue should not protrude excessively at any time, and you shall not have 'elevator eyes' ohmy.gif laugh.gif

The same company made every visitor watch a safety video about the plant, then you had to do a written test. If you failed you were made to watch the video repeatedly until you passed the test. Then they would let you on site.

To be fair that is standard practice (and may actually be mandatory) for chemical sites. It's not usually onerous but everyone needs to know what the alarms are, what to do if they sound - if not they need to be accompanied at all times by someone that does. I would be very worried indeed if I was allowed alone on a site which handled hazardous material and they didn't do this!

It isn't yet mandatory to explain to male employees how to treat members of the opposite gender, fortunately it isn't normally needed - but for some people I I think it would have been useful. tongue.gif
