I thing I didn't know about motherhood...how is it that an enormous, loud, grubby and disruptive adolescent is immediately transformed into a defenceless chick, cast into the stormy river of life (!) just by leaving home? I've been madly buying household stuff, imagining disasters, mentally constructing first aid kits/grocery boxes/helpful parcels to send later etc etc. Next week he'll be out of my house and in a strange city and I will have to find another way to manage maternal anxiety which doesn't involve shopping, making lists, planning emergencies and their solutions, and so on. It's all a bit unreal.

It's difficult to let go when they first move out, isn't it? Don't worry, he'll be fine! Is he off to university, or is it his first job?
As for things to do when he's gone, try to enjoy your new found freedom.

If you're busy taking up a new hobby, you won't have too much time to worry about him.
