Nope, I've lived in East Kent all my life and I love fish finger sandwiches with salad cream, it's no good for anything else.

My girls love fish finger sandwiches with ketchup.
I like them with tartare sauce.

That's the way I like them too! Lemon juice + tartare sauce!!!

When I lived in the south east (top end of Surrey!), all my friends and family (from the north) thought my local fish and chip shop was 'posh' because everything came with a slice of lemon and sachets of tartare sauce!

I can't stand salad cream with anything!

I douse my fish & chips or fishfingers with anything that happens to be available - all or any of ketchup, tartare sauce, lemon, vinegar and curry sauce if it's there.

(maybe I ought to just empty all the sauces into a bowl and eat it with a spoon)

Some time ago I was in a small Fish and Chip cafe in Otley ( yes I sometimes dine there in preference to the Chevin Country Park Hotel where I stay). A really upper-class looking couple came in, and ordered. The guy concluded by 'and don't you dare let a piece of lemon either on or near my plate ! It taints the fish!' As if he were expecting a lemon wedge in Otley !

Actually I have hardly ever used salt, vinegar or sauces throughout my whole life. To me they spoil the natural flavour of what you are eating. Occasionally I will use pepper, but things like brown sauce or ketchup ? Yuk !

I certainly won't use vinegar on chips, and rarely have sauces with meat (mint with lamb being the honourable exception).

Have salad cream with my chips...or occasionally something more drastic like 'Reggae Reggae Sauce' or 'Holy Cow garlic chilli sauce'

The UK people I work most closely with are off this week.
The US people I work most closely with are mostly all off this week.

So nobody is coming to me with niggling problems to sort out. Nobody is there to test stuff that I have already done for them.

So I just sent my manager a message, asking if he had anything I could do for anybody at all, any technical requests needing action whatsoever. His response was 'Let me see...it's a bit quiet'. That's his way of saying 'not a thing, I'm afraid'.
In further exploration, we've found a checklist I can work through to update as it is substantially out of date. He said I could do that 'if you're sufficinetly motivated', which I think means 'if you're sufficiently bored'.

He asked me if I was intending to come in to the office this week or just stay at home, both agreed we would just take each day as it comes and if the weather was OK then we'd go in and maybe see one another for my annual review, but if not, not.

It's just odd. Normally this is a frantic time as I have people hassling for me with stuff that MUST be done before the end of the year (the MUST aspect being so that they can say they completed objective X in the calendar year, and hope that is reflected in their bonus ). This is the first time in many years I've actually wound down at the end of the year - but it seems everyone else has too, so those of us who aren't on hols are all "working from home" sneakily reading a book (or a forum, or watching telly, or whatever!)

Oh yes I do like a bit of mint with lamb.



The Holy Cow reminds me of a restaurant I visited in the Thornton area near Bradford.
A starter was 'Crab with Good Heavens sauce'
I asked what 'Good Heavens' sauce was.
The waiter replied, 'Well when you taste it you will exclaim 'Good Heavens'!

Now that made me really laugh out loud!
Actually, they weren't late but they saw my husband's car in the drive so they were sat in their car waiting for me! I had husband's 4 by 4 as I had to take child no. 3 to County orch and that is further than his work so I figured I needed his car! I didn't look on the drive! The upside is it made me do some piano practice whilst waiting! However I only found all this out by ringing their home number. Younger bro told me left an hour ago. Me panics and thinks they really might be dead. Then I ring mother's mobile who is at work.... and thankfully I eventually discover that my pupil is only temporally late! Not late late......
It's her 3rd last lesson before her exam. The first time, the examiner changed her time. so we had another last lesson. Then she was poorly and Mr Nice Examiner said he'd come back to examine her....and hopefully her exam is tomorrow. Her first last lesson was the best. Her clarinet is now broken. So I have sent poor Dad off to the mending shop.... brand new clarinet! Whoops.... and expensive too.....

Mr Nice Examiner has been abroad and I keep checking for an email to tell me he is stuck somewhere in Europe. Then we may have another last lesson....

It makes me want fish fingers. However, what I have to eat is a pile of leftover fried noodles, or it'll go off. So no fish fingers for me.

Fishcakes go well with chips and gravy, but I'm not sure fish fingers would.

Continuing this theme, last time I was in Aberdeen, one of the things on the bar menu in a pub was 'Cruachan'. It appeared to be chips with melted cheese and gravy on top ! Not for me though.

I had a job interview today. I know that academic jobs are really scarce and you need to take what you can get. However, this is a research-only job (teaching is where my heart is) in a different subject area and, having found out more about the research project at the interview, there is absolutely NOTHING I find even vaguely interesting about the job. I don't want to move to a completely different part of the country for a year to do a job that I have no interest in whatsoever. I know that 'a job's a job' - especially in the current climate - but would I be totally crazy to turn it down if I was offered the post? I'm kind of hoping they'll offer it to someone else, but they have decided to take up references which I'm a bit concerned about as it sounds like they might be seriously considering me.

After the trouble my better half has had, I would be tempted to take it.

It's not that simple. The problem is that if I was offered and accepted the post I would be ruling out any possibility of the career I want, and which I've invested years of time and effort into developing. I'm not sure that I'm prepared to do that yet. Would I be better off working in the local Tesco? - probably...

Argh. Ten year old having late night temper tantrum. My automatic response these days is giggling because he is so comically dreadful. Unfortunately this makes the situation 10 times worse. Complete loss of plot has occurred.

It sounds to me as if you know in your heart of hearts that accepting this job would be a bad idea. I can see why others have advised you to take it, but if you have no interest in it at all, perhaps you should follow your heart this time.

Your post reminded me of No 1 son when he was that age. He once barricaded himself into his bedroom in a fit of temper and yes, it was hard not to giggle.
