I wish I had a machine to turn back time.

But I also wish I didn't waste time regretting things.

Hey Celeste.

This has always been my one biggest faults. It's driven me mad me for years and I now get really annoyed about it. I've always worried too much about what other people think about me and I've spent too much time worrying about decisions I've made, and who I've upset etc etc.

Sounds cheesy, but just try to let go of it and do whatever you feel is right at the time and live with it. smile.gif It's *your* life. You need to do what makes *you* happy. The only person that will 100% look out for you is yourself, so make the most of the opportunities you have, and do what you see fit with your time here on this tiny speck of dust in the universe. wink.gif

If there's nothing beyond this life, then I won't care because I made the most of it. If there is, then I don't care either, as I've always lived by solid morals and principles - if I'm to be judged, then I'll do quite well, I think. smile.gif

Anything expensive (a piano, wireless set or furniture) was priced in Guineas in those days. A Guinea was one pound and a shilling, or 105 pence in modern money, and was meant to make anything expensive look a little less so. smile.gif

My parents bought their first car, a grey secondhand Vauxhall Victor, (Reg No 780 NPK) in about 1964. It had a three speed column change gearbox, which meant it had a bench seat in the front, so I could sit between my mum and dad! I distincly remember that four gallons (18.2 litres) of petrol cost one pound in those days. blush.gif

I've got a sudden craving for an orange blink.gif

I had that feeling as well. I was reading about practising the art of mindfulness and eating an orange can aid in that. You should eat the orange segment and only when you have finished the segment you move onto another piece. It keeps you in the present and stops you from rushing. I may just give it a go.

My son is off school again today. He got swine flu over the xmas period and ever since gets really bad colds, high temps and fevers at least every 2 to 3 weeks. He has had quite a bit of time off school and his immune system has really taken a battering. I wont be playing any recorders today though as I have him off and the other scallywags bedroom to finish.

Have a fun day whatever you get up too

Ah - well that would not be on, would it?

Mind you, I didn't read the post (just the title, by which it had gone) but if it hinged on lateness of results I might have some sympathy with the poster.

Y'know I'm fairly sure I saw a correlation for adjusting the heat capacity of water according to the proportions of ions in it... so then, providing you had a handy ion detector of some sort, you could work out exactly how much faster your potatoes would cook when you added salt and so on...

Unfortunately I was looking for how oxygen solubility in water was affected by the presence of other molecules and didn't have time to look into this more carefully. Not that I am sad enough to have done so. Honest.

Nope, just the usual sprinkle will do it. It's impurities in the water (I think, LONG time since I graduated!!) that make it boil faster, not at a higher temperature. Oh and it stops it foaming so much too.

Erm you can't tell I'm avoiding writing program notes, can you???

Oh my... what have I started?!

Look, when I've finished this project, and don't have 20,000-odd calculations from the horrifically unhelpful British Standard on pressure vessel design, I'll look into the optimum salt loading to a saucepan for faster cooking potatoes which don't taste disgusting...

Oddly enough, I don't actually know why adding ions (this is, salt) elevates the boiling temperature of water slightly, off the top of my head. I guess it must act as a anti-surfactant of sorts, which makes the bubbles form less easily, so supressing boiling... once it starts boiling the liquid temperature stays essentially constant... so if you can make it boil at a higher temperature, the potatoes sit in hotter water, and cook faster, like turning up the oven...

... and I really shouldn't be thinking about this too hard. Funny how ANYTHING is more interesting that pressure vessel design. Honestly, if I'd wanted to do mechanical design, I'd have done mechanical engineering!!

So according to this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boiling-point_elevation

lilly763 is right, you would have to add a stupid amount of salt to the water.

I shall continue adding salt to my potato boiling water because it makes it taste nicer.
