I was just rereading Gone With the Wind again today (yesterday?) and I love it so much - the problem is that despite all the tragedies I've read, the ending to this book gets to me more than any other. Perhaps I identify with Scarlett more (though I think she's selfish manipulative and cruel... so what does that say?) but I always always cry and mope for DAYS at the thought that Rhett would just go off and leave her.

I need The Simpsons version I think.

So, I know in the sequel (written by someone else) she gets back together with Rhett - but the style seems very different. "My Love. My Life!" for example, can anyone actually see Rhett ever saying that?!

What do you think? Is Scarlett determined enough to get Rhett back - remember he's told her he didn't love her before when he did... Is Rhett willing to give Scarlett one more chance - why or why not.

I hope someone has read the book and replies.

Also, this is my first poll... so if it didn't work right, sorry.

It's a long time since I read the book, and I'm not sure just how true to the book the film version is. However, I think realistically people can only take so much, and I think Rhett would have cut his losses and left for good.

Incidentally, it quite surprises me that this book affects you so much. Personally, I find most of Thomas Hardy's books far more depressing - but perhaps it's my age! tongue.gif

Oh Thomas Hardy.... yeah... but I don't identify with his characters half as much - I think there's something in the fact that Gone With the Wind isn't considered great literature... I mean, it's just a book to curl up in bed with really... so I never concentrate on it and I just get all caught up.

I know what you mean about Gone With the Wind - it's one of my favourite books, every so often I catch myself having a "Tomorrow's another day" Scarlett moment!

I don't think they would get back together, I think Rhett gave her all the chances he possibly could and in the end he had to cut his losses and walk away. Probably a good thing, because however much she might think it would be different if he came back she wouldn't be able to stop herself acting in the same way over and over again, and much as he may love her Rhett's no doormat (she wouldn't want him if he was).

Oh no! That's two nos and only one yes! I mean, sure in real life they wouldn't get back together... but in a romantic novel?! Well I think they will - mostly because I want them to. Also because Rhett has said he didn't love Scarlett before out of wishful thinking and pride, and Scarlett is very determined - so is Rhett, but if secretly he still wants Scarlett, everyone's a winner.

Perhaps you should pen an alternative sequel with the required happy ending?! wub.gif wub.gif

Hmm... an intriguing idea... I shall give it some thought. I've never been much good at writing romance before though, I feel horribly guilty for the ###### my characters would go through and change it so they have an easier time. It might end up very very short...
