I have the log fire on, I have thermals on, I have a big fleecy jumper and thick socks and I'm still sooooooo cold. I can't possibly move my fingers enough to play my violin or to do any work and I'm miserable. I've tried jumping up and down, drinking warm tea, cuddling a dog and eating (in case I needed fuel) and my fingers are still stiff with cold.
What's your best suggestion for keeping warm please....

In my first year at uni, the heating in our block in halls didn't work and it was bloomin' freezing. There was, however, plenty of hot water. So I used to go and have a very hot bath, then put pyjamas etc on and go straight to bed before I had the chance to get cold again. If you don't want to go straight to bed you could still try the hot bath to actually get properly warm, followed by the thermals, big fleecy jumper etc etc.

Yes, I second the hot bath idea. It always works for me, and I stay glowing for about 15 mins afterwards.

An electric OVERblanket is my best buy to keep warm. I've had underblankets before but these just warm the bed and then you need to switch them off - but the Over-blanket is a different story. Apart from it's ability to be left on all night I can wander round the house wrapped in it and just plug myself in wherever I settle- often at the piano, which is electric anyway and so is by a handy double socket.

I've recently discovered that going outside for a walk or for a run in a t-shirt helps.

Because you're so cold outside that the inside cold becomes much less noticeable for the rest of the day.

Hot baths only work for me in summer when I'm cold. In winter I get out and am even colder than before because of the contrast. At the moment my fingers are icy cold and I'll trying to warm them up by typing quickly.

i) Move to Spain
or
ii) Ask your GP for a thyroid function test if it's you are always very sensitive to the cold

Burn wood. When our heating wasn't working last year during that really freezing spell myself and the kids all slept in front of the fire, which we kept topped up with a neighbour's old decking that he had just replaced. Coal doesn't give the big blaze that wood does.

I agree with the hot bath idea...
Try takin your dog for a walk (I'm presuming you have one by your comment earlier...)...works for me.
Though I'm still cold...may pop off for a hot bath soon!

I lit the first fire of the year today! Trying to save on heating oil, though you can bet it'll run out on the coldest day...
Maybe I should get the pupils to bring a lump of turf for the fire like they did years ago
I like the sound of an electric over-blanket - I left my ordinary one on the other night and woke up in what felt like a furnace
Also, could it be bad circulation causing you to feel cold all the time?

Wait a minute.
How do we know she actually lives in a house?
With the information shes given us she could well live in the woods.
If so I suggest
Buy a house.

If you collect fallen wood, then cut it up and then burn it - you get warmed up three times.
Alternatively - wait for hot flushes to arrive (might take a few years depending on your age)

Same here! You'll often find me wearing 'winter uniform' (blouse, jumper, trousers, blazer) in the middle of summer!

The weather is meant to be reasonably warm (for October) tomorrow, according to the forecast, which may be a small consolation...

Good idea actually.....

I do live in a house although an American (teenager) once asked if we still lived in caves over here and was amazed that we actually had television!!! I think she though Scotland was Third World .. (but the education, or lack of it, of some Americans really is astonishing...

)
Anyway, thank you for all your suggestions. I wrapped up in loads more clothes and took the dogs for a walk and that helped. I don't know why I couldn't get warm. I have a FABULOUS electric blanket on my bed which I truly love... it's the kind you can leave switched on all night... mmmmmmmm....
It does get very cold up here but there was a gale force wind blowing against the house so with the wind chill the whole place was freezing. Amazingly for such a backward country we do have central heating (and even electricity

) so when that came on the day was saved.....
Off to chop up some sheep for the fire...... (to keep the porridge warm while I crochet my kilt.....)
p.s. I thoroughly recommend shoving a small dog up your jumper for sheer cosiness....
