Uprights sound much better, don't they! The middle pedal on an uprightis so much more useful than the middle pedal on a grand! smile.gif

I certainly find them more comfortable to play, but that's because I've always played and learnt on uprights - any chance I get to play a grand is fleeting, and therefore I don't always play my best.

Like that Steinway at the Leicester Concert (I think it was last year) was cracking, but I couldn't get to grips with the touch of the pedal, because I just wasn't used to that sort of action.

This is surely a joke thread! Who, having a house with a room big enough to take a grand, and a wallet big enough to afford one, wouldn't jump at the chance to own a grand? Count me out of this club, please!

A good upright piano is better than a bad, unloved and untuned grand but otherwise, no! I have a beautiful old grand here made in 1810 and restored to its former glory and I love it. If I had space and money I would have two grands in my studio. (I would have my own concert hall too.) I love playing on grand pianos.

isn't this a little like asking if coffee is better with two teaspoons of sugar or one dessertspoon of sugar - assuming a) that you like coffee and b) that you want sugar in it?

I think a nice piano is better than a nasty one biggrin.gif

One major disadvantage of the upright has to be how unsociable it is, facing the wall, usually sad.gif . Even a good upright can't compete with the best of the grands, but I agree with the others - a good piano is better than a bad, and if you compare a good upright with a bad grand, the former will be preferable.
