Just wondering, is this a classical guitarist's forum for I'm more of a rock orientated guitarist (lots of distortion, never play lower than the 12th fret and snap strings on bends quite frequently)!

Well at the top of the page it does say "Associated Board Of The Royal School Of Music" tongue.gif
And also, at the moment, Jimmy Page riffs don't form part of the syllabus. I should also imagine they are unlikely candidates for inclusion in the foreseeable future.
But feel free to contribute if you want to biggrin.gif
We probably all have guitar interests away from the syllabus stuff.

Its an open forum for all styles of guitarists however the ABRSM only cater for Classical guitar as fletch stated. I only own 2 guitars myself, a classical and a jazz box, i've never bothered with any of that distortion or wah but i can see how it could be great fun for youngsters. Feel free to post stuff you may find others who share your style of guitar.

Off topic a bit here TC, but I took the grade 6 Bach bouree on your recommendation and found it fairly straight forward. Just need to get the speed up to a performance level, or at the very least, a bit nearer the speed of recordings I've heard, and it's a certain starter on the day.
Hope you don't mind the abbreviation (TC)

Lol! Not at all. The Bouree is a fairly easy piece to play just be careful with the last 4 bars. They are a little more tricky esp if you play the first section to fast.

I don't get how that tells me whether or not this is a classical guitarists forum...

Its not a classical guitarist's forum. Thats the point. Anybody can post any points and questions they have related to music and their instruments. However if you've ever had an opportunity to look at a ABRSM syllabus most of the material is classically based. The recently introduced jazz syllabus does however include rock, blues, reggae and ska material as well as more mainstream jazz both trad and modern.

Thank you!
Mr bluefrets
tongue.gif Had to join in - surely it is just a forum for musicians in general? I taught myself classical guitar whilst taking electric guitar grades and learning solo Jazz guitar. (i.e. Joe Pass/Martin Taylor) Ergo, I can't be described as either a 'classical' or electric guitarist - I actually practise most of my electric techniques on my nylon string classical guitar! (except bending beyond a semitone) Alongside that, I often practise fingerstyle Jazz + classical guitar on the same guitar...

I teach all styles of guitar for a living and have to deal with all graded syllabi too - including ABRSM... So if it were just a classical forum - I'd have no real reason to comment? Or would I? I play classical guitar and can cope with the highest graded pieces easily enough... Although I prefer Jazz and Blues/Rock...

I still believe it's possible to be hugely adept at both styles - i.e. Classical and 'popular' music - especially Jazz...

doubtless many would disagree! biggrin.gif

I don't disagree!
I, like you, use whichever guitar I have in my hand if i'm working at the chords or whatever of a particular tune.
Most people, I think, take up an instrument because they want to play in the style of someone, or in some style of music.
If you teach then, you really should be adaptable to accomodate a broad band of styles.
