In my grade 4, my teacher said I need to slur chromatic scales, um... HOW? Because say chromatic starting on E, F (fair enough) but then moving 2nd finger from F to F# just creates a glissando and it happens most of the way up. Am I doing something wrong? Is there an alternative way to play then slurred using a different fingering or something? huh.gif huh.gif

I think that the glissandi are absolutely necessary and that you will certainly not get penalised for them in an exam!!! biggrin.gif

Its not possible to do it with out one is it?!! I dont think that it will matter in an exam though, because that is what slurred chromatics sound like!!

u do have to use them (of course) but try keeping ur finger on (example) F as long as possible, then quickly slide to F#, at the same time slowing ur bow down (but not stopping) so that u can't hear the gliss much. hope tat helps smile.gif

Hee hee, if glissandi were allowed, and I had my way, I'd play the whole scale by sliding ONE finger all the way up ONE string and down. smile.gif tongue.gif biggrin.gif wink.gif laugh.gif

So any luck so far on the scales? biggrin.gif I have to do it anyway for my exam next year so I'm in need of tips too. I haven't really learnt them yet. But how do you know when to use the same finger and when to change??

Hi,
Has anyone taught you the 121234 fingering. This should avoid glisandos. If it's a chromatic starting on F put your first finger on it.
F# - 2 close to 1
G - 3 close to 2
G# - 4 close to 3 All fingers are close as you are working in semitones
A -open string
A# - 1
B - 2
C- 1 (shift to second position)
C# - 2
D-3
D# - 4
E - open string
F - 1

You can use this fingering for all chromatics.
Hope that helps

LOL!!!!

I've thought about doing that as well!!!! wouldn't that be so cool if you were allowed to do that! laugh.gif

Yeah, I wish!!. That would save us a lot of sweat (and marks!) for chromatic scales. tongue.gif Thanks for the fingering tip, Una. I'll try that out.
