I bought a book last week called "Guidelines on the Instruments of the Orchestra" by Lee Ching Ching. I found it a very useful book and think that it would be useful for theory exams. Sorry it is a bit late for you guys on the 7th. On the back of it, it lists such titles as, "In Preparatin for the Theory Exams", "An illustrated workbook guide to the ochestra, composers and their Music," "An Introductory workbook guide to music scores", "An Introduction to 20th Century Music", "3 in 1 concept figuring the Bass Bach's chorale trio sonata", "Guidelines on Intervals, Transposition & Triads", Guidelines on the History of Music", "Identifying Music Scores", "Identifying Music Scores", "Guidelines and Technical erms & Musical Devides used in Musical Compositions", "Guidelines on Melody Writing", "Guidelines on Figured Bass", "Guidelines on Harmony" and "Workbook on Harmony". I have actually listed them all now. I have not seen these, apart from the one I have, in the shops and cannot seem to track them down on line, apart from in Australia. Does anyone know of an online UK supplier where I can obtain these. Thanks, because I really want to be good at theory and it will help with grades 6 and 7 as well as consolidate everything for earlier grades I think.

I've also been searching for these books and had very little success. I managed to pick up the Workbook on Harmony 6, Guidelines on Harmony. Guidelines on Figured Bass and Guidelines on Melody Writing (from Oxford). I think I also ran one to ground in a local music shop. The impression I've been given is that they are out of print. As well as being much easier to understand than some of the other theory books I have bought another plus is that they are very reasonably priced. I'm still looking for the workbook and guidelines on Identifying Music scores. In fact I'd buy all the titles if I could find them!

smile.gif I've spent a bit of time since I wrote the above comment and been trawling through websites and I've found a few of the publications at;

I've contacted them and they are going to try to get hold of the titles I am after. Hope this is of help to you.

Thanks for replying, cellophan. I have only just seen this. I will look at the link you have given to me, because I always want to get them all. The music shop at the Barbican Shop can order them I think, so will give them a try if all else fails. I might also ring the shop where I originally got the book. It is a little shop called I think Elvidges in Muswell Hill in London.

I got the name of the shop wrong. It is Les Aldrich. I have just phoned them up and given them all the titles. They have said they can order them for me and if the wholesalers have them in stock I should get them next week. Fingers crossed. I think they are brilliant little books. Thanks for your link as well because I can also use that if the shop cannot get those particular ones.

I have found a couple of these (Harmony 6-8, melody writing 6-8, figured bass 6-8) in Chappells. However the other titles are not available from them, nor it seems any other music store in the UK. On further investigation, the publisher told me that many of the titles are restricted to the Malaysian market. I think this might possibly be due to copyright restrictions of extracts used in those books.

All in all, I find this a shame, as these are by far the most user friendly books in my opinion and they nicely supplement some of the other 'official' ABRSM titles.
