I'll respond on the Adult Learners suggestion probably in the next day or two

Thank you for your comments everybody. As I said when I first posted about the possible adult learners concert, I just wanted to sound the idea out at this stage. It seems that the opportunity for an adult learners concert in Leeds next Christmas may be welcomed so I'll keep the date tentatively booked with the college as an option, although it's too soon to decide anything definite just yet. Thanks again for all your comments.

I'm very despondant, as I can't come to Leeds this year sad.gif sad.gif sad.gif
I really enjoyed last year and was looking forward to it, but we have a holiday booked and will be in Malta.
SO I shall toast you all from there. party1.gif

Aaw, what a pity you can't come, but hopefully I'll get you meet you again at some other event smile.gif

Have a great time in Malta!

March is not a long time away! I have a recital then, and it seems all too close... ohmy.gif

I've been giving some thought to the Leeds concert, particularly in the light of the thread having been put into the sub-forum instead of remaining in the body of the General Music forum - I've always thought it was extremely important to have the thread in with all the other threads and I've said so publicly on a number of occasions.

QUOTE

"The main reason why I haven't asked for the thread to be pinned is because when I first joined the forums, it was weeks and weeks before I looked at the pinned threads. Being a complete novice on internet forums, and also being not much more than a novice on an instrument, I (wrongly) thought that the pinned threads about concerts looked very "elitist" for want of a better word - well above my level anyway, so I never looked at them. So I've wanted the Leeds thread to look like any other ordinary thread in an attempt not to discourage new members who might have got the wrong impression as I did."

The above post was made before a separate sub-forum was created for forum events. I understand why it was done, but it's had the effect of making them even more remote - and in my opinion, off-putting to newbies.

Before the Playday thread was put into the sub-forum, I had a number of enquiries about it from new members or new performers, and a number are coming to the Playday. Since the thread was moved, I've had no further enquiries about it, and this reinforces my concern about the Concert thread no longer attracting many of those people who it is aimed at.

One of the principles behind the Leeds concert, in addition to providing a venue where forum friends can come and mix music-making with socialising, is to encourage new or nervous performers to come and try and get over their performance nerves. In view of the fact that, in my opinion, it has now become more difficult to reach forum newbies, I'm planning to extend the format of the concert beyond forum members to the local community - in other words, I'm planning for it to be a cross between forum members and adult learners.

So if anyone is thinking of coming to the concert and wants to bring a friend who isn't a forum member, but who would like to try and gain more performance confidence/experience, please feel free to invite them smile.gif

I'm in the throes of sorting out some small ensembles, and if anyone knows at this stage that they would like to take part in any ensemble, it would be helpful if they could let me know.

DETAILS OF THE CONCERT ARE GIVEN IN THE FIRST POST IN THE THREAD... JUST CLICK THE FOLLOWING LINK:

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO COME AND PLAY, WHETHER IN ENSEMBLES OR SOLO, WITHIN A FRIENDLY AND MUTUALLY SUPPORTIVE ENVIRONMENT, PLEASE CONTACT ME BY EMAIL OR PM smile.gif

It was certainly quite a while after I joined the forums before I started looking at the Forums Events sub-forum. I'm not sure why - I probably assumed that events would not be suitable for near-beginners. Had I already been playing at Grade 6 level I would probably have looked into forum events immediately.

A couple of things for participants to think about...

For the pianists, I know the college has recently got some Clavinovas, and if anyone would prefer to play on one of these at the concert instead of the grand piano, I *think* one of the them could be moved into the studio where the concert is being held. The college is closed this week so I can't check, but I don't think it will be a major problem. Let me know when you send back the application form if you'd rather play on a Clavinova.

On the Friday, instead of going to Hansons, another option is a trip to a fantastic place for second-hand sheet music (Bygone Times at Eccleston). I go there fairly regularly and you could easily spend all day there ploughing through the piles. In practice it's so cold there that you can only spend two or three hours at the most! Anyway it's something to think about, and if you're coming for a long weekend, it would be worth a trip. Let me know if it's of interest smile.gif

Chosen the finale.

How does an arrangement of the finale from the New World Symphony sound? Parts from grade 1 upwards. smile.gif

That sounds good to me, thank you! Look forward to playing it!

In case anyone's wondering what instrument to play in the finale, Barry, am I right in saying that there'll be parts for orchestral instruments, plus recorders, drums and piano?

Once skylark opens the application form and she starts receiving entries, I'll allocate parts for the finale. smile.gif

All the info and the application form will be ready to upload tomorrow smile.gif

The closing date for applications will be St George's birthday (*our* St George!), 23rd April, so all participants for the Finale will be known by then, but I'll feed names through to you, Barry, during the application period as last year, and I'll do the same for the other ensembles.
