I've just been reading the specs of the newly released iPhone which was greatly received in the US and on friday, hit the UK. But from what I have seen, it doesnt seem to have had the same effect here. We sold our shares in Apple a couple of weeks ago when the price was going down, and since the phone came out, prices have gone down further.

Specs of the phone include:

2.0 megapixel camera
8GB flash drive
3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display
480-by-320-pixel resolution at 163 ppi
Support for display of multiple languages and characters simultaneously
Quad-band
Wi-Fi
Bluetooth 2.0+EDR

I must say, they havn't sold it to me. And even if I could afford it, i'd rather buy a better clarinet.

Has anyone got one or seen one in the flesh?
Ms.Fiddle
Compared to the other phones on the market from the likes of Nokia, Sony Ericsson and O2 XDA the iPhone is a pretty poor performer. Yes the looks and interface are appealing but spec wise it falls very short.

Well I need one about as much as a tomato. Not very much. Dont really want one either. Looks sort of cool I guess.

My boyfriend works for o2, so has managed to get hold of one. I haven't seen it yet, but he says its amazing, and of course I'll let you know when he trusts me enough to touch it!!

I need my mobile phone to make phone calls and to receive them. Only 4 people/organisations have the number, including husband and children's school.

I can manage with whatever does that, certainly don't need to buy anything new just because it's been hyped. My phone is 7 years old, does what I ask of it and is probably obsolete.

A sax sounds much more fun, Ben. biggrin.gif

I used to say a similar thing of my phone, that it did everything I wanted it to and that was enough for me. Unfortunately, it has taken to not ringing when people phone or text me, and failing to send and receive texts for a ludicrous period of time..

I played with one a few months ago when a guy from our NYC office popped in. The cool thing about it is the user interface. The technical specs are poor.

I just got a Nokia N95 8Gb -- excellent technology (GPS, 5MP camera, 8Gb storage, Wifi, 3.5G etc.) but the user interface isn't that great. In fact, the firmware is a bit buggy and I've already had to hack it a bit using some naughty tweaks. LOL.

You pays your money (well, mine was free) and you takes your choice I suppose...!!

Nice to see someone with decent priorities! biggrin.gif

The Iphone doesn't really strike me as something I'd be desperate to have. I tend to be the sort of person who'll use a mobile phone 'til it's terminally faulty in any case, and though my current phone is a tad tempremental, it doesn't appear to be ready for the scrapheap just yet...

The call/select button is missing from my ancient phone... I just carry it around, and press the button with a pencil... maybe I should at least get a new pencil.

Ben agree.gif though maybe not specifically about the sax... maybe sheet music, or piano lessons... and a piano!
My friend wants an iphone too though, he's an igroupie. Every technological thing he owns is apple.

I am using the N95 normal. I like the GPS becos its really useful.

I haven't had a look of the i phone, but i suspect the look is similar to ipod touch - which is quite cool. But of course, the technology is not the best.

Hows the battery life of i phone? Can you replace a battery at all?

Maybe I am just old...but I really can't see the point to these "superphones" I guess that it maybe something that younger people might use but not me. So long as a phone makes a call and recieves a call, txt etc then that about covers my needs...

I realise that technoolgy will continue it's relentless march but I seriously wonder how many of us actually need it...Yes its young, yes it's Funky but I doubt you get much change out of £300...

Andrew

£31 change out of £300 I think

I am hoping Santa might bring me one. It would save me carrying phone, organiser, mp3 player and camera around with me, and handy access to my emails on the move which would be great technology.

Just worried about the running costs and the fact that there is sure to be an upgrade before too long.

Might be worth waiting until the price skimming has taken effect, or January sales, or the next version, or the rivals version. Hmmm.

It's all about marketing and flogging as much as possible before technology moves on. The things are probably assembled in China by young kids and cost a few pennies to manufacture. People love gadgets! I know people who feel they must have the latest gadget - whether they need it or not.

I admit I'd feel naked without my phone, but I really don't need one that surfs the net, takes photos and videos, plays music, makes espresso cofee etc - though the last option would be nice! tongue.gif

The only other gadget I have with me is an old Palm Z22 PDA bought cheap from Ebay that contains all I could possibly need - addresses, phone numbers, bank details, Ital/Eng dictionary, Word doc reader, notepad for scribbling etc.

One thing that has always puzzled me is, if these superphones do so much, doesn't the battery run down very quickly?

Steve

I haven't seen one, but it'll probably be similar to most Apple products - stylish but not as good as the hype suggests. Specwise it doesn't seem to be anything special (not that I'd say no if someone offered me one...).
superpyroman
I'm scared that if I ever get to the stage at which I might have a use for a phone for some reason, I won't be able to get one that just phones people and costs less than £30.

Well; my phone is by no means a 'super phone' although it is pretty highly recommended at the moment.
I have a K800i, and I find that yes, the battery does go very quickly. So, I should imagine that with the iPhone it would be a similar problem.

It's not as impressive as I thought it would be, TBH...

Mine cost less than £30, it phones people, can send texts, has a few games and takes photos/videos. I doubt you'd find one that just calls unless it was a brick, but the gadgets arn't that expensive. Ignoring them is always an option!
Oddball
My phone was £50. Sturdy, good make, a few games. Nuffin too fancy.

I forgot to mention, my phone also spends rather a lot of time sat on my desk/in my bad with no charge ph34r.gif I don't use it much!

Mine too. A wee tesco moblie, lifted off the shelf for being the cheapest without bothering to browse, much to my friend's disgust. Texts are only 5p too - a tenner keeps me going for half a year laugh.gif

All those phones with web browsers would be great, but the screens are too small for me to make out properly.

At least I know no one will mug me for my phone wink.gif

I lost my phone last week... the only time I've ever known anyone to lose something at this school and actually have it handed in at the office. Someone obviously found it and thought it wasn't worth keeping.

I use my phone quite a lot...actually way too much ph34r.gif
But it's okay, cause I have this O2 simcard where if you top up ten pounds, you get a hundred free texts, top up £15 and you get 500, top up £20 and you get 1000 smile.gif
It never ceases to amaze me!

Mr LT's Nokia was marketed as being 'indestructible'. It is the rubberised one (can't remember the model) with built-in torch and radio. Yeah right, I thought....

Several years down the line, it's still working - despite being dropped several times, going through the washing machine - twice - and - to cap it all - the tumble dryer! ph34r.gif

We had to take it in once as we couldn't get the back off to change the battery. Apart from 'water damage' (you don't say rolleyes.gif ) it's still in good nick and refuses to give up the ghost laugh.gif

Wonder if an iPhone can be washed and tumbled? tongue.gif

Yes, i need to charge it (almost) every night. I am planning to buy the battery for N95 8GB which i believe is 1200mAh instead of the normal N95 battery which is only 900mAh.

If the battery of i phone can't be taken out and replaced, its capacity will decrease very much after charging + recharging it for a year and eventually it will have to be replaced. (unless you sign another contract and get another new phone)

I don't like the idea of sending texts from phone. It takes ages and so inconvenient! What i usually do is to connect my phone to keyboard and type on it. But i usually ended up in sending more than 6 messages at a time becos i ended up writing an "essay"...
Ms.Fiddle
I've two phones, one cost £300 and the other £450 (well they were free on contract but that's what they would have cost) I love gadgets and use many of the features. I would have considered an iphone had it offered anything that my other devices didn't already do better.
It's a shame really, as I said before the touch interface is very good but but the device as a whole is rather feature-light. Apple could have had another convert but they missed me again. rolleyes.gif
