Can you put a piano in a conservatory (the glass kind obviously), or would all that sunshine damage it somehow?
viola
I would have thought that the extremes of temparature that can be experienced in a conservatory would ruin a piano, bit I haven't tried it.
JulieCSM
That's what I thought too, but I wasn't sure.

You can buy quite cheaply min/max thermometers which are designed for greenhouses. I have one in my greenhouse and it's amazing how hot it can get in there, even when it is cold outside. These cold clear days are very sunny and that's what the greenhouse notices most!

I suspect conservatories are similar - even if you have shades and/or heating - but a min/max thermometer could be an idea just to show you how extreme the temperatures can be

please don't, my friend did it and the piano really suffered. Any piano tuner I 've ever had says heat and damp will ruin a piano and I guess most conservatories will have both. By the way have you read piano tuner on the left bank? It's a great book and you'll feel very prescious about your piano afterwards!

The reason we've gone for the extra expense of building a proper extension is so that it can house the piano. I would not want my pride and joy of 30 years being damaged by the temperature fluctations of a conservatory.

Thanks everyone! My gut feeling was that it was a no-no, but I just wanted it confirmed by those who knew a little more than I did!!

I think it's the "Piano shop on the left bank"?

Yes I've read it. Entertainnig but a bit bland I thought - a sort of musical version of a Year in Provence. Quite interesting as it does tell you a lot about pianos.

Ooooops, quoted the wrong message and can't sort it out. Should be a reply to Kate Bush fan's p[ost!

Er I'm sure bunging a piano in a nice, sunny glass box would enhance the tuning no end...... unsure.gif

Sorry, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit and I apologise. I think the general advice is don't do it!

Funny surreal idea though biggrin.gif

Yes its a great read for anyone interested in pianos. I lent it to my tuner who also enjoyed it ! It a true story, and by T E Carhart. I think the actual title is 'The Piano Shop on the Left Bank'
(oops sorry just seen Stumacs post now)

You could put anything in a conservatory, including a piano: It would ruin the piano beyond help, but you could do it.

This reminds me of an English teacher I had at school. A pupil from another class would come in and say "Can I have X?" and he would say "yes" and then leave them standing there while he went back to whatever he had being doing before they came in. (Very few of them realised they were supposed to say "May I have X?" if they actually wanted him to give it to them).

I found a review of this book from The Guardian - I love quirky little books like this and I've gone and ordered it - sorry to digress but thanks for mentioning the book smile.gif

PS There are lots of very cheap paperbook copies on the internet instead the hardback edition that The Guardian mentions.

Ours has blinds and a radiator but the temperature fluctuation is still enormous. Don't do it you will kill your piano!

I found this thread a few weeks ago and was looking for something to read so I promptly bought this book from Amazon. However, when I viewed it it had one of those perfect partners so I bought that as well. I got 'The Piano Shop on the Left Bank: The Hidden World of a Paris Atelier' the other day so I read it. I've just been to pick up 'The Piano Shop on the Left Bank: Discovering a Forgotten Passion in a Paris Atelier' today and... IT'S EXACTLY THE SAME BOOK laugh.gif

I thought one was a follow up from the other so this is just a warning, if you see this thread and decide to buy the book from Amazon (and it's an interesting read if you're interested in pianos) don't buy the perfect partner!

Now trying to work out who's christmas gift the new one is going to be (I don't think my piano teachers English is really good enough).
