hey....
this is a very difficult qutestion i know...with probably no specific solution..but still.....how does one cope with the nervousness and the butterflies in the tummy as the day of the exam draws nearer?(21st of sep..grade 7 piano)....
its as if no matter how much u practice...it never seems enough and everything goes wrong right before the exam! and the key to performing well in an exam ...more than being well prepared... i think is confidence.
any suggestions?

i'm a new pianist too, but i got a few suggestion of mine which i think it works.
1.try to reach the exam venue earlier(but not a few hours before it starts)i think this will help one to get familiar with the surroundings and make u feel more confident and comfortable, also try to walk around at the waiting room if u can
2.if ur teacher is with u at the waiting room, try to ask some question about your pieces or scales etc.maybe this can helps to help u to relax and also helps u lose the nervousness that u'll play the song wrongly
3.lastly.of my own opinion, i think u should laugh a lot when your're waiting and talk a lot too.if u just keep quite sitting there,waiting...it'll just give u a more nervous effect.coz if it's so quite , it seems that it such a formal and strict exam and .........(u should know the effect)

that's all , hope this will help u.andi'm curious that why r u still nervous?since ur already a grade 7 candidate.didn't u have tons of experiences??still nervous?? smile.gif have a smile and every thing will be going on smoothly. smile.gif

One obvious thing to remember is that things do seem to go to pot a bit a few weeks before the exam - I think this is normal, and happens to a lot of people, and is not necessarily a reflection of how you're going to play in the exam. I think the only thing you can do about this is to practise a bit less, and give yourself a bit of time and space to relax. There is also that the extra adrenalin of exam conditions should give your performance a boost.

okay, i'm a new student. but i got a few suggestion.
first, dun just sit there when u r in the waiting room, try to talk with ur teacher or ur frens ,and parents .next arrive at the exam venue earlier coz u may have ur time walking arround and make ur self clear with ur surroundings and this may make u less nervous. also ask ur teacehr about ur pieces or scales coz it may help u to gain confidence of making mistake in the exam.

and...... that's all.hope that these suggestion can help u. smile.gif

i'm quite suprised that ur a grade7 student and why r u still nervous?didn't u have tons of experience oredi?

I've taught myself meditation techniques (there enough books on the subject) to hope with the shaking, wheezy breathing and general approaching panic attack whenever I think about my grade 8 (and it isn't till Chrstmas) like now...

It helps a bit!

Hi i have just done my grade 8 clarinet and the last grade i had done before that was grade 3. I was convinced i was going to fail. It is normal to be really nervous before an exam but i find that it goes as soon as i enter the exam room. In the end i found out i got a distinction which i was not expecting. I have also found that nerves get better by more practice playing infront of people. After my clarinet grade i entered my self for grade 5 piano and i was not half as nervous as i was for my clarinet grade so just practice playing infront of people like family, friends and teachers. I hope this helps rolleyes.gif

Hi,

Its completely natural to feel nervous before an exam, which I know doesnt help how you feel. Im a university student and when I was younger i would feel really quesy before an exam and start having panic attacks which afftected my playing/singing. However as Iv got older and more experienced Iv come to learn that although you are being assessed in an exam at the end of the day its just another performance to someoe who is interested in what your playing. I take a couple of drops of Bach recue Remedy before the exam (available at boots) and drink water regularly, I also try to laugh a little with my teacher or accompanist and when I go in i usually make direct coomunication with the examiner by going upp and shaking hands smiling saying hello, etc the usual that way we both know where we stand and it becomes more comfortable. This may sound stupid but it does help. All the best for your exam. Just be confident and yourself.

nervoussness! the bane of musicians! the best exam I ever took was my grade 8 singing... i actually did this exam as a joke. my singing teacher was tired of putting people in for grade 4 the whole time, so she asked me in one of my lessons "do you want to do grade 8?" i thought she was joking, but then she said she thought i could actually do it... anyway, because i didn't really mind whether i passed it or not, i wasn't nervous at all because i knew it didn't matter. i spent all my warm up time playing baby elephant walk on the piano and laughing with all the other people there (i think they all calmed down a bit too!) and then i just went in and smiled my way through the exam. the best thing u can do is smile! i got 130 in the end, woo! so just smile! biggrin.gif biggrin.gif biggrin.gif smile.gif
